Zambia international Lameck Banda scored the decisive goal as US Lecce secured their Serie A status with a 1-0 victory over Genoa CFC at the Stadio Via del Mare on Sunday.
The result ensured Lecce avoided relegation for a fourth straight season — the longest uninterrupted top-flight stay in the club’s history.
Banda struck after just seven minutes when Genoa goalkeeper Nicola Leali parried Walid Cheddira’s initial effort into his path, allowing the Chipolopolo winger to convert from close range.
The 24-year-old remained a constant threat throughout the first half and was twice denied by Leali, who produced fine saves to keep Genoa in the contest.
Genoa thought they had levelled five minutes before the break through Morten Frendrup, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up.
Lecce continued to push for a second goal after the interval, with Cheddira and Santiago Pierotti both striking the woodwork, while Genoa threatened through Stefano Sabelli and Patrizio Masini.
Home supporters were also closely following events elsewhere, with relegation rivals Cremonese falling heavily behind against Como. News of Como’s goals sparked celebrations inside the stadium as Lecce edged closer to survival.
The victory also marked a personal milestone for Lecce coach Eusebio Di Francesco, who finally secured Serie A survival after suffering consecutive relegations with Frosinone and Venezia in previous seasons.
Banda finished the 2025-26 Serie A campaign as Lecce’s leading attacking contributor, registering five goals and four assists.
