Interim Chipolopolo Boys coach George Lwandamina has said midfielder Rainford Kalaba will remain as Chipolopolo Boys captain following the recall of Chris Katongo, a man Lwandamina has described as a legend.
Though Lwandamina has continued to say Kalaba will wear the armband against Congo, there has been heated up debates not only among soccer fans and pundits but also among the Chipolopolo players.
The ZamFoot Crew understands there are could be more than three camps when the foreign based players join.
“The captain is there, Kalaba is the captain. Jacob gave the armband to Chris on his own in recognition of the legend but I am not saying Kalaba should also do the same. So as far as I know, Kalaba is captain,” Lwandamina has been courted in Wednesday’s backpages.
“It is an interesting issue and one to look out for. Kalaba is not Jacob Banda, and there’s no way he will just hand the armband back to him the way Jacob did. But on the other hand, the armband means a lot to Chris, ” a ZamFoot Crew source said.
“There could be also the Kennedy Mweene and Collins Mbesuma camp which feels Chris doesn’t deserve to have it.
“Then after relegated to senior level status, the likes of Stopilla Sunzu and Nathan Sinkala will be watching quietly but this issue should be handled properly.
Depending on how they resolve, Lwandamina’s decision will be on the line.
Should the technical bench be diplomatic and ask players to pose for the cameras like they did when Sunzu gave it to Kalaba, this time with Kalaba handing it over to Chris Katongo, then it won’t go well in other camps.
It’s an open secret that Chris Katongo has always been Lwandamina’s ‘son’ having worked together during their time Green Buffaloes before the legendary AFCON winning captain joined Jomo Cosmos while Kalaba and Lwandamina have a professional relationship.

People are trying to create issues where they are none. Plenty a player have had to move on from being a Captain to being a follower. Some of the greatest footballers i.e. Pele, Romario, Ronaldo (Brazil), did not wear the armband. Even players like Beckham who cam back to the national team and found someone else as Captain were accepting of the fact. This is football; if Chris Katongo cannot be a good follower than and mentor for Kalaba, then he is not useful part of the team. If this really is an issue, as a coach, I will looking upto Chris Katongo to be the one who defuses it and that will only come through his actions in camp and how he handles it.
The issue of brings Chris to the national team is confusion in itself, the coach is @fault here.

This story has the hallmark of bringing divisions and disunity in the team. Why not just accept that Kalaba is the current captain and wait for developments? I read between the lines that the article is meant to whip players emotions and that is not only bad but totally unacceptable.
Disunity is the main reason why the Dutch National Soccer Team has failed to win many high level trophies, and it has been the undoing of many Teams on the African continent. Please don’t ferment it.
True coz at the of it all, teamwork and dedication to win is what matter most, regardless where a player hails from or how much he worth or has achieved.
