Interviews for Chipolopolo coach on next week

SEVENTEEN foreign coaches have applied for the vacant Chipolopolo job.

The job has been available from the time Frenchman Herve Renard ditched Zambia in October, 2013 for Ligue 1 side FC Sochaux.

His assistant Patrice Beaumelle was left in-charge of the team before he equally dumped the team to join Renard with Honour Janza and George Lwandamina all taking charge in an interim capacity.

Failure to qualify for the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and with the Russia 2018 World Cup finals to begin, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has set the recruitment of an expatriate coach top priority.

FAZ general secretary Ponga Liwewe confirmed in an interview yesterday that 17 expatriate coaches have applied for the Chipolopolo job.

Liwewe said the list will be reduced to a short list of four candidates who will be interviewed next week with a possibility of a new coach to be employed afterwards.

“All I can say for now is that 17 foreign coaches have applied for the Chipolopolo job. We shall shortlist four names and those will be interviewed by the end of next week.

“If everything goes well, we can have the whole process completed by next week and have a coach in place,” Liwewe said.

Asked on whether funds have been secured to pay for an expatriate coach’s salary, Liwewe said FAZ was still in discussion with Government.

Government had earlier this year hinted that there was no money to pay an expatriate coach and was banking on the cooperate world to come on board and assist with funds.

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga revealed after the Chipolopolo’s failure to qualify to the AFCON finals and subsequent elimination from the COSAFA Castle Cup that Zambia will be guided by an expatriate coach ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

Kamanga held talks with the likes of Frenchman Phillipie Trousier, who is believed to be the favourite for the job going by his experience, when he was in France for the on-going European football championship.

Others said to be interested about the Chipolopolo job include Beaumelle, Dario Bonnetti, Frenchmen Sebastein Desabre and Bertrand Marchand, and Belgian Tom Saintfiet, who also had talks with Kamanga in France.

  1. We owed Patrice some months in unpaid salaries so him ditching us doesn’t leave him at fault. He is a good tactician and his team is always fit when he is in charge. I would go for him than those marverick coaches like trousier who resign at the slightest provocation !

  2. Patrice was working without a contract and FAZ wanted it like that and he left .Otherwise him and wedson can be a produce results .I mentioned this a week ago and it seems FAZ is agreeing with me since kamanga is also a headless chicken just like george,I have to advise him.

    • Bakandile. they r quiet. dats the only way to shut them up. news of good development. coz them bakandile feed on bad performance by zambia to attack kamanga

  3. Dario Boneti is another character who travels too much to his homeland in the name of observing foreign players. My pick would be Patrice, he’s good.Zambia doesn’t have quality top players hence we shouldn’t raise so high our expectations.

  5. THE Football Association of Zambia has approached Mozambique-based Zambian coach Wedson Nyirenda for an assistant role to a yet-to-be-named expatriate coach.

FAZ is head-hunting a coach ahead of the World Cup qualifiers in October following Zambia’s failure to qualify to the Africa Cup.

Highly placed sources disclosed that both acting coaches Nyirenda and George Lwandamina could be part of the new national team technical setup.

“Yes, Wedson has been approached for the job at the national team. He could be assistant to the new expatriate to be recruited or things may change and could become head coach himself depending on the financial situation with government. But the truth is he has been approached specifically to be assistant unless something changes and he is willing to come and help,” the source said.

Another source said a named big local club has approached Nyirenda for a coaching job but has put that request on hold awaiting the outcome of his engagement with FAZ on the national team job.

“He has actually been approached by a certain club but he has told that they wait to see where the FAZ approach ends, so he is among those being considered,” the source said.

FAZ general secretary Ponga Liwewe could not be reached as his phone went unanswered.

Nyirenda is one of the most successful local coaches, having won titles with Zanaco and Zesco United.

Nyirenda, currently coaching Mozambique topflight side Ferraviaro da Beira, also coached the Zambia Under-17 national team.

  6. UNDER-17 national soccer team coach Oswald Mutapa has told his players to be exemplary at the COSAFA tournament so that they can earn themselves a call-up to next year’s AfCON Under-20 tournament.

Zambia will host next year’s Under-20 AfCON tournament scheduled for February 26 to March 12.

In an interview, Mutapa, whose team has been drawn in Group B of the COSAFA tournament alongside Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar, said the competition was an opportunity for his players to earn themselves places in the Under-20 AfCON team.

“This is a developmental side, and if the players showcase their best talent, they can be included in the Under- 20 side. This is a good opportunity for them,” Mutapa said.

He warned his players against underrating any team at the tournament.

“The draws are tough and we can’t afford to underrate any team in that group,” said Mutapa.

The Under-17 COSAFA tournament kicks off on July 22 in Mauritius. Other teams that would compete include host Mauritius who are in Group A along with Seychelles, Namibia and South Africa.

  7. FORMER national team coach Patrice Beaumelle is not available for the Chipolopolo job owing to a three-year contract with the Moroccan Football Association.
And the Chipolopolo will face Egypt in an international friendly at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on September 6.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) general secretary Ponga Liwewe said in Lusaka yesterday that the friendly is aimed at preparing the Chipolopolo for the 2018 Russia World Cup against Nigeria set for October 1.
Beaumelle, who drilled the Chipolopolo for a year after compatriot Herve Renard quit in 2013, is assistant coach for the Morocco national team.
He said in an interview from Casablanca yesterday that he is honoured to be among foreign coaches being considered for the Chipolopolo job.
    Frenchmen Philipie Trousier, Sebastien Desabre

  8. FORMER international mid fielder Jericho Shinde says there is need for coaches to find a solution to to the blunt strike force in the country.
Shinde said in an interview on the sidelines of the Football Association of Zambia D licencing coaching course in Kitwe yesterday that coaches should return to the basics of sharpening strikers.
“We should first ask where we are coming from, there should be long term investments. I feel people are neglecting the basics, that is why we have this problem.
“In the long term, let us put the right skills in the youth. For me, that is where we have been getting it wrong in the recent past. Andrew Kamanga [FAZ president] and his group should be supported to revive youth

  9. please don’t bring culprits coaches like Patrice and Bonetti better Herve Rena than those who dumped the team like unwanted baby. chose new experienced people that will bring change to our Zambian Football we are the best on Africa and at World level, if the players are well selected so please don’t bring tired Coaches.

  10. Dario Bonnetti again? The guy that does his Coaching on Skype from Italy? He is a joker.
According to @Pink Frog, Patrice Beaumelle is not interested in the job as he is currently assistant Coach of Morocco. It seems as this is all propaganda from FAZ on these coaches interested in the job.

I would love to know who has been short listed on the list?

  11. BONNETI IS A GREAT COACH we have never done better than we did with him in Afcon qualifiers in a long time we won 4 drew 1 and lost 1

  12. Why go for people that ditched us? Let FAZ gor for other accomplished coahes. By the way what method is FAZ using to recruit? is it headhunting? Then Kamanga talks to some of the coaches in Europe. Is he not giving undue advantage? I think FAZ should just have advertised the post without any official talking to any prospecticve candidate so that all applicants should be at the same page. Good luck in your quest to find the best coach for Zambia.

  15. Patrice or bonetti. Bonetti never ditched the tea0 renard made it with the team that bonetti made he never made a team for zambia patrice is the man behind renard success therefore, he is another gud trainer for zambia.

  16. We have a lot of talent in this country and whoever will be given the job will give us results and also discover hidden talent.

I believe FAZ are very careful in finding the right coach who will bring back glory days.

These guys know what they are doing because if we just see how they are putting everything in order you can tell that we are going far.

    DON’T FORGET TO BE AWESOME

  19. CHIPOLOPOLO hitman, Collins Mbesuma has clinched a three-year deal with newly promoted South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) side, Highlands Park.
The PSL reigning top scorer turned down a move back to his former club Golden Arrows.
Bloemfontein Celtic also have a long documented interest in the Zambian forward.
But Mbesuma settled for Highlands whose location in Johannesburg gave them the edge over other competitors.
According to South African online football magazine, KickOff.com, Mbesuma had apparently indicated that he was not so keen on moving away from his current base for the sake of his school-going children and would prefer to settle down in Johannesburg.
In an interview after finalising a deal in Johannesburg yesterday, Mbesuma, who banged 14 goals for Mpumalanga Black Aces last season to pick up his second golden boot in South Africa, confirmed that Highlands have offered him a three-year contract.
The 32-year-old striker said he was happy to join the Lions of the North, as Highlands are affectionately called, and promised to continue working hard.
“Highlands have offered me a three-year contract. I just want to continue where I left from,” Mbesuma, who became a free agent after parting ways with Aces at the close of the 2015/16 season, said.
Highlands, who secured promotion to the Absa Premiership after beating Mbombela United in the play-off, have been busy in the transfer chasing players with PSL experience.
The Tembisa outfit have also acquired the services of former Aces skipper Eddie Ngalo.
Mbesuma turned down a move back to his former club Golden Arrows as well as Bloemfontein Celtic.
Ngalo was also on the wanted list of Golden Arrows.
While at Aces, Mbesuma replaced Ngalo as a captain.
Its believed that Mbesuma opted to stay in Gauteng Province due to family commitments so any offers outside the region he rejected.
Highlands are also chasing the signature of Bloemfontein Celtic’s Thabang Matuka, Vuyisile Ntombayithethi of University of Pretoria, Jackson Mabokgwane and Limbikani Mzava of Black Aces.
They are also believed to be chasing Glasgow Rangers target Ugandan midfielder Khalid Aucho.

Zambia defender Stoppila Sunzu signs permanent Lille deal

French club Lille have signed Zambia international defender Stoppila Sunzu on a permanent deal from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua.

The 27-year-old, who initially joined Les Dogues on a season-long loan last summer, was snapped up for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal, according to the French Ligue 1 side.

“Lille feels very much like home and I am delighted to continue my career here,” said Sunzu, who made 16 appearances in the north of France, scoring twice.

Top Lille official Jean-Michel van Damme is delighted to tie the Zambian down to a permanent deal.

“Every time we called on him, Stoppila proved effective. He has already integrated and is highly respected in the squad,” said Van Damme.

“Sunzu is not only a great professional but also a great gentleman. He’s a great addition to the locker room.

“We are very pleased to have been able to sign him, especially with the challenges of the Europa League, where we will require his competence and strong commitment to help the club.”

Sunzu’s arrival last July saw him reunite with then-manager Herve Renard for the third time having played under the Frenchman for Zambia and French side Sochaux.

The pair enjoyed international success together in 2012 when Renard led Zambia to the Africa Cup of Nations title, with Sunzu scoring the winning spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out win over Ivory Coast in the final.

Sunzu, who represented his country at the 2007 Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Canada, has made 59 senior appearances for Zambia since making his debut in 2008.

New Mighty Mufulira Wanderers Portuguese -born coach Paulo Silva began his debut on a dramatic note when was sent to the stands in his sides to a 1-1 away draw at Zesco United.

Silva was sent off in stoppage time of the first half after Zesco had equalized as he felt the pressure of jumping straight into the fire with a date against the defending FAZ Super Division champions at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Wanderers took the lead in the 4th minute through Rahim Osumanu who headed in Mike Katimba’s cross following an early wave by Mighty.

However, Zesco quickly settled down to dictate play with their usual high pressing and passing game led by Cletus Chama who gave the Mighty backline a torrid time.

Chama almost conjured a goal for Jackson Were in the 19th minute but the striker fired his effort high and over by his very high standards.

Mighty then suffered a setback in the 38th minute when goalkeeper Joshua Manyongo was stretchered off and replaced by Chrispin Chisowa after failing to recover from an injury he sustained in a duel for the ball with Chama in the 31st minute.

Were, though, did find the target in the 45th minute when he blasted in the ball from the near post as Mighty’s defenders struggled to quell a six-minute on-salught from Zesco.

Zesco turned on the screw after the break but Mighty resolutely defended for a draw to see the home side pick up their second successive point after Green Buffaloes held them at the same venue by the same margin last Saturday.

The defending champions are now seven points behind Zanaco on 33 and 40 points from sixteen and seventeen matches played respectively.

Wanderers stay put in 12th place despite the draw but move slightly from 18 to 19 points after seventeen matches played.
