FAZ wants foreign quota as Lusaka Dynamos, Buildcon panic

The Football Association of Zambia, FAZ is contemplating introducing a law which will limit the number of foreign players a club can field on match day.

According to the ZamFoot Crew sources at Bola House, the ‘foreign quota’ law might even be effective from next season on wards.

“It’s very much a possibility and the bosses think each team can have minimum of five players,” a ZamFoot Crew insider revealed.

Last season, Ndola side Buildcon made headlines after they named starting line up without a Zambian player.

“If you noticed Buildcon only had Jonas Sakuwaha as the only starter in most of their games in first half of the campaign.

“That was an eye opener and there were fears that the Zambian game might suffer at the expense of exposing foreign players,” adds the source.
While there have been those fears, an important positive has been addition of high profile players.

In the last two seasons, Congolese duo Walter Bwalya Binene and Chris Mugalu have finished the league as top scorers with 24 and 20 goals respectively.

Buildcon’s fellow big spenders Lusaka Dynamos are also trying to recruit more Zambians for next season.

“Should the foreign quota be passed then we expect only quality players will be signed by the clubs.

But clubs like Zesco United, Zanaco, Forest Rangers, Buildcon and Lusaka Dynamos can argue their case citing that they already have foreign players on long term contracts and that might delay the implementation.

  1. The issue of having long term contracts with foreign players wont stop the implemation which was long over due. They will loan them out to other clubs.
