Copper Princesses arrive in Lome for World Cup decider

The Zambia U17 Women’s National Team has safely arrived in Lome, the capital city of Togo, ahead of Saturday’s decisive FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup final round, second leg qualifier against Benin.

The Ethiopian Airlines flight carrying Carol Kanyemba’s 21-member side touched down at 11:11 local time at Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport, marking the start of the final stretch in the Copper Princesses’ quest for back-to-back World Cup appearances.

Zambia holds a 2-1 advantage from the first leg played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, where captain Mercy Chipasula scored a brace to give her side the edge.

The second leg will be staged at a neutral venue in Lome on Saturday, 26 April 2025, following a decision to host Benin’s home fixture in Togo.

The overall winner over two legs will qualify for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2025 to be held in October.

Coach Kanyemba’s team is expected to hold a light session later today in the build-up to Saturday’s match as they acclimatize to the Togolese weather and local time zone with Lusaka two hours ahead of Lome.

The Copper Princesses will be hoping to maintain their composure and seal qualification on foreign soil, following the inspiration of Zambia’s U17 men’s national team, who recently booked their place at their own World Cup.
