Chris makes losing return as Zesco restore 5 point lead

Former Chipolopolo captain Christopher Katongo returned to the Zambian Super Division but could not help his club Green Buffaloes FC go down 2 – 1 to log leaders Zesco United in an exciting match played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

The Champions Zesco made it six wins in six games and did not waste time in making their intentions known when they went ahead in the 6th minute through Mwape Mwelwa beat Fred Silwamba in the Buffaloes goal.

Buffaloes despite not creating as many chances remained calm with some good interchange of passes and neat play.

They eventually pulled one back at the stroke of half time after another good move into the box which resulted into a disguised shot by Lottie Phiri in a congested box which left Jacob Banda in the Zesco stranded on his line.

Zesco were more forceful going forward after the restart with Jackson Mwanza and Winstone Kalengo all being denied from close range by eventual man of the match Silwamba also known as ‘Dugude’ for his huge figure.

However, Maybin Mwaba was not to be denied by his childhood friend when the ball outside the area to shoot home from range and beyond the reach of Buffaloes goalie in the 81st minute.

Moments later, Silwamba had to again save from another shot from Mwaba which he tipped over the bar before he again rose to the occasion to save a point blank save from substitute Jonas Sakuwaha who was played through on the right.

Katongo had a subdued match but showed good movement and vision for his forward players. He was substituted by Chileshe Kangwa with 5 minutes to go after he seemed to complain of a thigh injury.

In the early kickoff, Forest Rangers were held 1 – 1 by visiting Nchanga Rangers at the same venue.

  1. An Aubrey Chamulwanda’s header earned visiting Nchanga Rangers a 1 all draw at Forest Rangers in the ‘Rangers battle’. Joe Besa had put the hosts 1 up after Mundia Makonkwa meandered through the visitors right sided defence before assisting him. Nchanga were looking for a double having won 2-nil at home on 14th March. Forest moved to 23 points,7 ahead of Nchanga.

  2. @ Mr Kateka Moses, good observation on the Headline, it reads as if GBFC have been doing well in this season and Chris’ return contributed to their to loss, which is not case.

All in all, I think the return of these guys ie. Isaac Chansa, Chris, Joseph Musonda and the rest back to the local league should be an opportunity to be utilised by Chicken and his team, so that we maximise our chances of qualifying to both the CHAN and AFCON,if these players continue playing well the way Isaac and Chris are doing it at the moment. Let by-gones be by-gones and move forward for the love of the game.

  3. Gentlemen asking for Chris to come back in the National team are out of touch. How long do you want the man to keep playing? Lets give younger players a chance.
