Zambia’s Group at the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) is shaping up following yesterday’s games.
Morocco who are chasing a third CHAN title began their campaign with a solid 2-0 victory over Angola in the Group A opener at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
Imad Riahi’s spectacular long-range strike in the first half and a second-half own goal from Angola’s Kinito sealed a deserved win for the Atlas Lions in a contest they largely dominated.
The result extends Morocco’s unbeaten record in CHAN group stages and sends an early statement of intent to the rest of the competition.
Angola, meanwhile, are now winless in five CHAN matches and face an uphill task to qualify from a competitive Group A.
Meanwhile Kenya marked their long-awaited debut at the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 with a statement 1-0 victory over two-time champions DR Congo at a sold-out Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi on Sunday.
Austin Odhiambo’s first-half strike proved decisive in a tightly-contested Group A opener that saw the hosts overcome a nervy start and assert their place on the continental stage in front of an electric home crowd.
The Chipolopolo will be making their fifth appearance at the biannual tournament with their best outing being 2009 when they finished third.
Since then Zambia has missed three tournaments (2011, 2014 and 2022) and reached the quarter finals the other three times (2016,2018, and 2020).
Chipolopolo will kick off their CHAN campaign on Thursday, 7th August against Congo DR, followed by a meeting with Angola on 10 August.
The third match is against Morocco on 14 August, before concluding the group stage with a potentially decisive tie against the hosts Kenya on 17 August.
