BLOG: Zambia paints a negative picture after giving up U-23 AFCON hosting rights

I didn’t see it coming, you couldn’t either, especially that, lately Zambia  has shone the intriguing to host major tournaments in football.

The 2017 U-20 Africa Cup of the Nations, which Zambia hosted, was the defining moment. The Republican President, Edger Chagwa Lungu, even approached former CAF President, Issa Hayatou that, if any of the already assigned AFCON hosts is stripped of the rights–Zambia should be given the chance.

With the 2019 U-23 AFCON, which acts as a qualifier to the Olympics games, already given to Zambia–it was an opportunity to show the world once again, of the country’s capability of hosting major tournaments.

However, I couldn’t believe my eyes when, in the middle of the changes the CAF Executive committee adopted after suggestions made at the 2 days Symposium in Morocco, there was an announcement of Zambia withdrawing her rights to host the U-23 AFCON in 2019.

The opportunity for the country to prepare herself further, in terms of constructing stadiums, for bigger showpieces has gone to waste.

The fact that, the government could not fund this tournament sends a bad picture. How can CAF have faith in a country  that fails to fund an U-23 AFCON tournament?
