Throw Back Thursday – Africa Cup of Nations 1986

Africa Cup of Nations 1986 – Alexandria, Egypt

Zambia finished bottom of group B with a only a point after losing to Cameroun, drawing with Algeria and losing to Morocco.

Some old folks still sticks to the 70s side while those who were teenagers after the Italia 90 World Cup will always associate with the 1994 and 1996 sides.

There’s also the question how the 2012 African Cup of Nations team ranks.

  1. I only know Kalu,Wisdom and Chabala whom I had latter studied with the son Freeman Chabala at UNZA.My eldest brother knows that team better I remember as a 6yr old watching zambia vs mauritius or madagasca 1991 security was so tight you had to eat yo food before going into indepondo, this was because in the previous game pipo booed Kaunda(KK) my best zambian team was 1994 and not forgeting my beloved cite yamoto yobeba the likes of joe kabemba vasper janza and mohamed sidat lit up woodlands studium.

  2. Standing left to right Chicken George, Luck Msiska, third guy cant identify, Efford Chabala, Gentile Kapambwe, Jericho Shinde, Micheal Chabala squarting left to right Ashos Melu, Kalusha Bwalya Derby Makinka and last guy cant place properly. Have missed two. Others can assist, Kasama guy and Uncle Bob will even tell us which game this was and the scores. Over to you guys.

  3. Those good old days jersey was not all that an issue what mattered were results and these guys made us happy. Dennis Liwewe added spice to the whole game thats what really mattered and its an insult to refer liken this outlook as Jazz band or whatever. These guys made us proud to be Zambian.

  4. Standing L-3 Jones Chilengi (Gbfc)-5, Wisdom Chansa (Power)-10, Laban Chishala (Gbfc)-2,Efford Chabala (Mufulira Wanderers)-1, Kapambwe Mulenga (Gentile) (Nkana Red Devils)-3, Jericho Shinde (Nkana Red Devils)-6, Big Michael Chabala (Nkana Red Devils)-9

  5. All that i am seeing in the Zamfoot article & the rest is that Kalusha is great. 80’s team, man was a star, 90’s team still the same guy. All the rest like Chitalu etc its more sentiment than reallity!!! I have never heard of any country outside Zambia giving accolades to Alex Chola, Chitalu etal

    • What are you talking about?
Quote from late Liwewes record “It’s a goaaaaal”

“I have always been asked to mention what I consider to be great in Zambian football, players of yesterday and tomorrow. “Ucar” Godfrey Chitalu of Kabwe Warriors he possesses a commando tactical that leaves defenders all over Africa Shadows and shivering, I mentioned him 89 times alone in the second half of the Zambia Vs Uganda match. He is probably the best striker Zambia has produced; he scored 107 goals in one season for Kabwe Warriors”.

You talk of Alex “computer” Chola hahaha, go ask Kalu who taught him ball juggling? He will tell late Alex Chola. Kalu was talented but he was a good learner and learned a lot from Alex Chola. As far as ball juggling is concerned there is no player in Zambia Kalusha included who can match Alex Chola. Bali bena Alex nga aku pyanga wasumina noku sumina. Most teams were afraid of Ucar and Chola because these 2 were bad news

RIP Ba Ucar and ba Master dribbler

      Cheers to all fans

  6. Billy is 100% correct. These guys look very shabby in those jerseys…and guys were not photogenic at all on the day! Even Wisdom, Kalu and Derby who normally looked good on most team photos in the those days didn’t turn out great on the day….just wonder why!!!….Jones’ armband looks like a piece of string a cut from changing room curtains!!! I blame the photographer.

  7. You can tell who the young ones are all this blog. All you hear is jersey that jersey this or being photogenic. But if you put this team against all the current teams from 94 on wards these men would wipe the floor with them regardless of how photogenic or the shabiness of the Jersey they wore!!!!!!!!

You had guys playing for Vitafoam united walking into the starting 11……. happy to have watched these men play!!!

  8. That jersey was nice than the parlamilitary one if you are comparing. My best Zed National team was the one which won the trophy in terms of winning the Africon and mentality. The 1994 was the best in terms of strong mentality they showed after the death of the fallen heroes and they alike to the 2012 in they did not play a passing and stylish football like the fallen heroes. The 1996 was the best in terms of passing and stylish also winning convincingly like the fallen heroes but they luck which was with the 1994 and 2012.The 1980 had a lot of quality players and a a lot of indiviual success than of 1994 to today. My best the 1996 passing, stylish and winning convincingly and dominanated matches like the fallen heroes.

  9. This is from the early 80’s the shorts were too small and badly designed. I can’t see the logo but the kit definitely not adidas.

  10. This team is from 1985 or 1986.

Captain Jones Chilengi, Lucky Msiska, Lackson Chanda ?, Efford Chabala, Kapambwe Mulenga, Jericho Shinde, Laban Chishala, Ashious Melu, Kalusha Bwalya, Derby Makinka, Michael Chabala
