The draw for the 2023 Absa Cup will take place this morning at the ABSA Bank Zambia headquarters in Lusaka.

The eight teams involved in the 2023 Absa Cup comprise the top six clubs from MTN Super League and the top two FAZ National Division One clubs as of Week 17.

Power Dynamos, Green Buffaloes,  Red Arrows and Green Eagles have been seeded.

The unseeded teams are Super League sides Forest Rangers, and FC MUZA, Legendary Cup winners Mufulira Wanderers and National Division One log leaders Trident FC.

The ZamFoot Crew now Looks at how the teams have fared in the Competition previously.

POWER DYNAMOS

The Kitwe giants are the only side to have won the Competition twice, 2009 and 2011.

In 2009, Abayellow started their campaign with 1-0 win over ZESCO United in the quarter finals before eliminating Choma Eagles in the semifinals with a 3-0 scoreline, Kennedy Mudenda and late Elson Mkandawire on the score sheet.

In the final, Power beat Green Buffaloes to be crowned Champions winning their first title.

After losing to ZESCO United in the semifinals in 2010, Abayellow returned in 2011 and went all the way to win their second title.

They started their campaign like a house on fire beating Luena Buffaloes 7-0 , Luka Lungu  netted a hat-trick while Govender Simwala, Simon Bwalya, Felix Nyaende and a Gift Wamundila own goal sealed the huge result.

In the semifinals, Abayellow beat Red Arrows before seeing off Konkola Blades in the final to win their second title.

However this is their first participation since 2018 when they reached the semifinals.

Mwenya Chipepo’s side will be aiming for a third title to move closer to ZESCO United who have won six titles.

Red Arrows

Red Arrows have reached the final twice and have won the Competition once back in 2013.

The Airmen saw off National Assembly in the Quarter finals, Green Buffaloes in the semifinals and Nchanga Rangers in the final on their way to their glorious triumph a decade ago.

In 2022, They succumbed to a 1-0 win to NAPSA Stars in the final.

Green Buffaloes

The Zambia army sponsored outfit have been consistent in qualifying for the Competition though they have only won it once. They have qualified nine times previously.

2015 was their year beating High Flying Nkwazi in the final at Nkoloma Stadium.

On the way to the final they saw off Power Dynamos in the quarter finals and ZESCO United in the semifinals.

Green Eagles

Green Eagles will be making their fifth appearance in the Competition.

Their best campaign is a semifinal in last year’s competition.

Forest Rangers are heading into the draws with their third qualification while FC MUZA will be making their second appearance following a preliminary stage exit in 2018.

2018 quarterfinalist Mufulira Wanderers and Trident are the two teams from FAZ National Division 1 who made the cut.

The quarter-finals are scheduled for the weekend of March 11 and 12, with the semi-finals a month later on April 8 and 9. The final will take place on Saturday May 13.
