ABSA Cup Beckons as Green Eagles Host Mines United

A home win in Choma could seal qualification as Mutapa urges focus against a bottom-placed but unbeaten side.

Green Eagles coach Perry Mutapa has warned his side against complacency ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Mines United, describing the relegation-threatened visitors as “dangerous” despite their position at the foot of the table.

Eagles host Mines United at Independence Stadium in Choma on Saturday, with kick-off at 15h00, knowing a victory could be enough to secure qualification for the 2026 ABSA Cup.

The Choma-based side are coming off a morale-boosting 1–0 win over Red Arrows, which ended a six-game winless run. Eagles sit ninth on the log with 22 points from 16 matches. Mines United are bottom with nine points, but arrive in improved form, having gone three matches unbeaten with two draws and a win.

Mutapa believes that recent uptick in results makes the visitors a serious test.

“It’s going to be a difficult game… playing a team like that is very dangerous. We are going to take it seriously and we know it’s not going to be an easy game, but we are at home and we are planning for the three points.”

Eagles have been boosted by the return of Bornface Sunzu, with Mutapa praising the added defensive options while calling for greater ruthlessness in attack.

“We have options at the back and we are looking solid… we create a lot of chances, but we just need to be scoring a lot of goals.”

With ABSA Cup qualification firmly in focus, Mutapa said Saturday’s fixture represents a defining opportunity.

“This game is the perfect home match to qualify… we just need maximum points and then we’ll qualify.”

The Eagles coach also underlined the importance of belief across the club and converting positive performances into results.

The most important thing is to put up a performance and get the maximum points.”

With everything aligned for a decisive afternoon in Choma, Green Eagles know victory would bring them a step closer to their cup ambitions—while Mines United fight to keep their season alive.
