Today, August Mulenga reflects on the one-year anniversary of the passing of his former teammate and close friend, Justin Shonga. The two footballers shared countless memories on and off the pitch, both representing Zambia’s national team, the Chipolopolo, and playing together at Orlando Pirates.
Shonga, known for his impressive skills on the field, left an indelible mark on Zambian football. His untimely passing was met with an outpouring of tributes from fans, teammates, and fellow players.
Mulenga’s heartfelt message captures the essence of their bond: “You weren’t just close — you were family.” The two players forged a strong friendship that transcended the football pitch, built on shared dreams, struggles, and laughter.
As Mulenga remembers his brother, he still hears Shonga’s voice, jokes, and advice, feeling his presence even in death. Shonga’s legacy continues to inspire a new generation of Zambian footballers.

🕊️ One Year Without You, Shonga 💔
Today marks a full year since I lost not just a teammate or a roommate… but a brother.
From the national team to the club, we shared dreams, struggles, laughter, and memories that I’ll carry for life. You weren’t just close — you were family.
Not a day goes by without thinking of you. I still hear your voice, your jokes, your advice… I still feel your presence.
Thank you for being the kind of friend that only comes once in a lifetime.
Rest in peace, my brother. Forever in my heart. 🕯️❤️ #RIPJS12 #ForeverBrother #GoneButNotForgotten
