Zesco United go second with win over Arrows

Zesco United surged into second place on the MTN FAZ Super League standings after they defeated Red Arrows 2-0 in a week four rescheduled match played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Wednesday.

Jackson Mwanza broke the deadlock in the 17th minute to score his third league goal of the season and Jesse Jackson Were added Zesco United’s second goal, taking his league tally to eleven, when he stole the ball from goalkeeper Danny Munyao following a back pass from Rodrick Zimba in the 48th minute.

Wednesday’s victory means that George Lwandamina’s side moved to 31 points from 14 matches, supplanting Nkana into third place on goal difference.

Zesco United have a realistic chance of catching up with run away league leaders Zanaco on 40 points, if they win all three of their matches in hand against Green Buffaloes, Mufulira Wanderers and Nakambala Leopards.

In their quest to clear the fixture backlog during the mid-season break they host Green Buffaloes in a week fourteen rescheduled fixture on Saturday.

Dates for outstanding matches against Mufulira Wanderers and Nakambala Leopards have been fixed for the second round of the league season owing to a Caf Champions League match against Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast on July 16.

Meanwhile, Red Arrows stay in eleventh position with 20 points from 17 matches.
