Manfred Chabinga in an aerial tussle with Italian player who could be attacker Pietro Paolo Virdis as Johnston Bwalya looks on during the Seoul Olympics 1988.
Chabinga played at right back in the game while ‘One Man Commando’ J Bwalya was on the right flank though the front players were very fluid switching positions in the game.
Chabinga is the current coach for Mighty Mufulira Wanderers.
Zambia recorded a famous 4 – 0 win with ‘Great Kalu’ in blistering form scoring a hat-trick while J Bwalya scored the other goal.
How Zambia lined-up on the day:
Efford Chabala – Manfred Chabinga, Edmond Mumba, Samuel Chomba, Ashios Melu – Derby Makinka, Charles Musonda – Wisdon Chansa, Johnston Bwalya, Kalusha Bwalya – Stone Nyirenda
Johnson Bwalya (far right) Langston Kaputula (centre – blue/white jersey) Celestino Matafwali (partially obscured – blue/white jersey) and Miko Pikinini LOL! Seoul Olimpics ’88
So those days Olympics were not for Under 23?
Those days Olympics were for players that had never taken part in the World finals. That is why Italy had Taccon WHO went on to become the Italien International goalkeeper. Germany had the likes of Klinsmann, and many more WHO went on to form the backbone of the team that won the 1990 World cup in Italy. Brazil had Romario. This was changed by FIFA and the rules now that when a team qualifys to the Olympics they are allowed to use 3 overaged players
Some years back Olympics were for non pros but FIFA and the Olympic committe have kept on changing the format and rules, for reasons best known to themselves. The problem with the Olympics is that you only get a medal no Cash (If you get paid then that has to come from Govt)pathetic

We are no longer living in the past.. Zamfoot this does develop zambian football.. Please expose the unheralded talent in foreign land. Rubbish you can’t even report about cyril chibwe in south Africa ..
‘THROWBACK THURSDAY’ Do you have any idea what that means??
@ jojo throwback it has nothing to do with development of football . Its just as good as an old widowed woman dreaming having sex.. Since zamfoot started flashing these throw back is their any change ..
If you are not interested, you better not comment, but rather keep quiet. There are those of us who are interested and been been following Zambian football from the late seventies/ early eighties era. Thanks.
Boss here is my take-Manfred Chabinga currently coaches Mighty Mufulira Wanderers who are playing exceptionally well-now if a current player sees this picture and says “Coach so u played at the Olympic Games, what should I do to get an opportunity to qualify U23 Zambia to the Olympics, so that I am exposed and signed on by a European Team, so that I make money and invest in a Telecom like Eto did in Cameroun that shall employ 1000 employees through job creation and furthermore, set up an academy where budding stars shall be nutured etc”. See how using this throwback picture can have a positive ripple effect” Optmists see opportunities in problems while Pessimists see problems in opportunities!
Well said Uncle Bobs.
I agree with your perception of making money and thereafter injecting into our poor economy not the other way round as John has been preaching (improving our talent) We have talent all We need is self awareness and confidence in our players. What make an European club sign a player is because they have seen talent which they don’t have period
That Tony mash comment is misplaced we all enjoy THROWBACK THURSDAY’S. This 1 is easy I have da DVD. Almost all answers r correct.

For those of us born in the 60s this is excellent as it reminds us of those days. But in any case, you use your history to understand your present, and you history combined with your present helps to shape your future strategies. It is only by re-living the past that you learn what went wrong, and where you went wrong.
After the team was re-built in 1993, we were still beating Senegal 4-0 at Independo. We can’t do that now. We are even afraid of meeting Kenya.
We can use our history to under stand where it all went wrong. It is only from looking back that you can understand whether you are improving or going wrong.
The past is our heritage, why throw it away. Some bloggers, awe chumi.
Indeed Ba Kasama Boy, I like your part where you said “It is only by re-living the past that you learn what went wrong, and where you went wrong.” Well spoken and very true indeed.
Bob Marley once said “in this greater future you shouldn’t forget your past” It is indeed foolish to forget where you are coming from.
@Ba Kasama Boy well spoken my brother. Could not have put in better words than you have.
Does anyone here still remember that team that Edmund Mumba played for?
