Proposal to tighten qualification for FAZ presidency floated

WITH just a year before the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) holds its quadrennial elections, Nchanga Rangers and Afrisports have proposed that only people who have served in the FAZ executive should contest the presidency.

According to a circular sent to all clubs and signed by FAZ general secretary George Kasengele, Rangers had written FAZ to amend the constitution to put restrictions on presidential candidates.

The current FAZ constitution states that any person who has been an official at club level for five years can contest the FAZ presidency.

“Nchanga Rangers have proposed that for a councilor to stand as a president of the Football Association of Zambia, he /she must have served in the FAZ executive as an executive committee member,” the circular states.

The Afrisports proposal states that: “One of the qualifications for one to stand as FAZ president is that, one must have served in FAZ either as an executive committee member, treasurer or vice president before.”

This constitutional amendment proposal will, however, be presented to the FAZ council which will convene in Kabwe next weekend for the non-elective annual general meeting for confirmation.

The proposal looks to be in line with the controversial amendment to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) constitution made last year in Mauritius where the continental body said only CAF board members can vie for the presidency, a clause which FAZ president Kalusha Bwalya so vehemently defended.

Whereas the whole Africa protested this clause, Kalusha stated that it was a way of protecting CAF from people with no interest in the game from springing up from ‘nowhere’ to contest the continental top job.

The FAZ circular also stated that Rangers were also proposing an attachment of fees to people vying for various positions.

Rangers want presidential aspirants to pay a nomination fee of K25,000 with K20,000 for the vice-president, while candidates for treasurer and committee members should part away with K15,000 and K10,000, respectively.

  1. This is an attempt by the Kalusha supporters to block other potential FAZ president, and give Kalusha a free passage to keep the presidency. Any well meaning Zambian soccer enthusiasts should oppose this. This is a form of dictatorship which should not be tolerated in Zambian football. Kalusha is copying these dictatorial tendencies from the pathetic Issa Hayatou and Sepp Blatter. Abash FAZ executive. We need new people in FAZ.

  2. DICTATORSHIP BY KALUSHA BWAYLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO TO HELL WITH YOUR CAF INSPIRED LEADERSHIP, HE THINKS HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN RULE FOOTBALL IN ZAMBIA!!! YOUR POOR LEADERSHIP HAS BEEN EXPOSED VIA CHIPOLOPOLO, UNDER 17, UNDER 20 PERFORMANCES THIS YEAR!!!

  3. @john, @ mashina that’s true. As patriotic soccer fans we shud vehemently protest this fuckery.the entire FAZ exec has failed us. Why shud the same failures continue to run football house?

  4. This is worst rubbish from Rangers. in fact all those who have served in former executives should be BARRED from standing. this will cleanse FAZ FROM CRIMINALS WHO HAVE TURNED FAZ INTO PERSONAL KATEMBA.

  5. It’s just ridiculous. Perhaps a new process for constitutional changes should be floated. How can Afrisport, a club that Kalu is involved in is trying to put across such a proposal. This guy is not even subtle about his thievery anymore. #uselessFAZ

  6. Mr Blackwell Siwale the Nchanga Rangers Chairman should be ashamed to even habour such ideas . This is wrong and very un-welcome in modern dispensation period. Afrisports have been on the wane and need to concentrate on some recovery path than pushing for undemocratic tendencies like this one. Great Kalu needs to preserve his great credentials and not be hoodwinked by such hangers-on.

  7. I have tried to think about this propsal in all ways. I dont think its a bad propsal but it is one born out of fear and negativity to say that such would destroy something – to say that people(football family) who vote for their exective committee are not able to choose and guard against this hypothietical disaster scenario. So there is that fear negativity over something which cant even be prooved to be bad truthfuly and there is the fact that the timing if the propsal is approoved will only serve a political purpose that suits the executive in office.

It should be rejected, naturally the football community should be trusted to pick its own executive and naturaly the executive it picks should people who do well and mean well. Even in the United States government there is not a rule that says only a person who has served the presidential office can be elected president if the United States, there is no such rule, why does the FA of Zambia need one?

We might create the stagnant inbred cycle of exective members and outcomes we are trying to avoid.

  8. A TOTAL BUNDLE OF NONSENSE FROM AN INTELLECTUALLY BANKRUPT BLACKWELL CHALWE. IT SHOULD BE REJECTED WITH THE CONTEMPT IT DESERVES. PEOPLE WHO CANNOT SEE BEYOND THEIR NOSES SHOULD LEAVE THE THINKING TO THOSE WHO CAN THINK.

    • You are another intellectually bankrupt fellow. In your own razor deep analysis, are you convinced that out of the 14.6 million Zambians, the members of the current Excom are the only ones who can govern football matters in this country? You are so myopic in your thinking and do not see that one day these guys will be no more, one way or the other and you want football to grind to a halt because the ‘only’ football administrators in this country will have gone! Football will out-live these ‘ONLY’ administrators and habour no illusions about this. I would not hesitate to crown you as the clown of the year 2015. Go to hell with your warped thinking and stay there.

      • I can’t agree with you more…in practice the ‘Excom’ would never die because someone will always have to be voted into the committee from ‘outside’during an election, which in due time would actually create an elite…it is for this reason why the whole idea is WRONG!

  9. Kalu and his fellow clowns can be so pathetic at times. This a democratic state hence every aspect has to be done that way.If he is indeed the great as he was as great as a player why is he not in favor of an open floor to prove that he and his clowns are the right people. He wants now to bring ancient one candidate elections, atase.
