Patson Daka scores as Mwepu puts in a decent shift for Salzburg

Zambia national team striker Patson Daka chipped in with a goal as Redbull Salzburg eased passed lower-tier side Ebreichsdorf to progress to the quarter-finals of the Austrian Cup with a 5-0 scoreline.

Salzburg boss Jesse Marsch made seven changes to the team that started against Rapid Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga over the weekend.

Chipolopolo midfield ace Enock Mwepu came on to replace Denmark Defender Rasmus Nissen Kristensen at right-back while Patson Daka took up the place of Norwegian teenage Sensation Erling Braut Haaland upfront. Malian duo of Sekou Koita and Camara plus Ghanian Ashmeru also came on to replace Hee-Chan Hwang, Zlatko Junuzovic and Takumi Minamino.

The defending Champions even with all the changes were still too good for the hosts and opened the scores in the seventh minute through Japanese midfielder Masaka Okugawa. Koita doubled the lead six minutes later before the 2017 CAF young player of the year, Patson Daka could make it 3-0 before the half-hour mark. The match went to the break with Salzburg maintaining their comfortable 3-0 lead.

Coach Marsch withdrew Daka at the hour mark and replaced him Kristensen to push Enock Mwepu back into midfield and introduced Haaland nine minutes later to replace Ashmeru.

Sekou Koita got his brace 15 minutes to time to further increase Salzburg’s advantage. Haaland scored four minutes to time to complete Salzburg’s emphatic 5-0 win. Mwepu was withdrawn eleven minutes to time for the Korea Republic forward Hee-Chan Hwang.

Patson Daka has now scored eleven goals for Salzburg this season, Nine in the league and two in the cup. He is still searching for his first UEFA Champions League goal.

Salzburg will have been joined by St. Pölten, Austria Lustenau, Amstetten Swarovski Tirol, Sturm Graz, Wacker Innsbruck and LASK Linz in the last eight of the Cup.

Salzburg’s next match is against Mattersburg away in the Austrian Bundesliga and then a trip to Naples to face Napoli on matchday four of the UEFA Champion League group stage.

  1. Did Guus Til commit to Holland? I was following the previous write up on the Samfya born Zambian / Dutch player who is now playing for Spartak Moscow. I notice he appeared for the Dutch team sometime last year. Does that mean he is ineligible to be considered for Zambia? And what did FAZ do or are doing to make him play for Chipolopolo.
As for U23 Olympics, I am wondering about Kenneth Kalunga. And if the team selected is th ed best possible for Zambia. Thanks

    • We shall probably lose out on Guus…He is more Dutch than Zambian I reckon…Kalunga is actually a good player…in the same way I have always wonder about Justine Shonga, isnt he under 23 by the time the tournament is done???
