Nchanga Rangers Football Club has won its appeal against a Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Disciplinary Committee decision to demote the club to Division One effective 2017.
The Disciplinary Committee ruled on 5 November 2016 that Nchanga Rangers FC be relegated from the MTN FAZ Super League after four of its officials were found guilty of attempting to corrupt a match official before a league match with Nkwazi Football Club on 29th October, 2016.
The Disciplinary Committee had also ruled that the four officials – Elijah Mugala, Matyola Haanyama, Patrick Nkhata and Shadrick Chalenga – be charged K5000.00 each for failure to appear before the Disciplinary Committee in addition to banning them from football activities for life for attempting to bribe a referee.
But at its sitting on Monday, 21 November 2016, the FAZ Appeals Committee quashed all sanctions against Nchanga Rangers and its officials because the referee did not include attempted bribery allegations in his match report.
“The Appeals Committee, having examined the referee’s report of that match, found that the referee did not include the alleged bribery incidences. The Committee, therefore, quashed all sanctions and fines imposed on Nchanga Rangers FC and its officials,” said FAZ General Secretary Ponga Liwewe.
The Appeals Committee decision means Nchanga Rangers will play in the 2017 MTN FAZ Super League as long as their final position on the league standings is not in the relegation positions.
