Charles Musonda pays heartfelt tribute to fallen Zambia star Numba Mwila

Former Zambia international Charles Musonda Sr has paid an emotional tribute to late Chipolopolo midfielder Numba Mwila, describing him as one of the country’s most naturally gifted footballers whose talent captivated supporters wherever he played.

Mwila, who represented Zambia between 1991 and 1993, was among the 30 people who lost their lives in the tragic Gabon air disaster on 27 April 1993, a tragedy that claimed the core of the national team and remains one of African football’s darkest moments.

More than three decades later, memories of the former Nkana FC midfielder continue to resonate with those who shared the dressing room and the pitch with him.

Among them is former Zambia and Anderlecht midfielder Charles Musonda Sr, who reflected on the qualities that made Mwila such a special talent.

“As talent began to emerge again in Zambian football, one player who stood out was Numba Mwila, among others,” Musonda wrote.

“Short, stocky, and incredibly strong on the ball, he could go left or right with ease. His close control, dribbling, and ability to pass in tight spaces were a joy to watch. Fans left the stadium smiling. ‘Twatamba bola’. It is always nice when supporters have something to talk about on their way home.”

Musonda, widely regarded as one of Zambia’s finest midfielders and whose professional career in Belgium was cut short by a persistent knee injury, praised Mwila’s football intelligence and natural understanding of the game.

“Some players simply understand football. They instinctively know when to pass, when to dribble, where to be, and how to react when possession is lost,” he said.

“Numba was one of those players. When I shared the pitch with him, I was convinced that this was the quality we needed. Unfortunately, things did not unfold as we had hoped.”

Mwila’s performances for Nkana and the national team established him as one of the brightest prospects of his generation. Despite his career being tragically cut short at the age of 21, those who watched him continue to speak of his remarkable technical ability and strength in possession.

Musonda believes those attributes set him apart from many of his peers.

“But one thing remains true – Numba Mwila possessed rare natural ability and real strength on the ball,” he added.

Born on 18 March 1972, Mwila represented Zambia during a period of growing optimism for the national team and was considered a key member of the squad that died in a plane crash.

His football legacy continues through his family, with his younger brother, Numba Mumamba, currently serving as head coach of MTN Super League side Zanaco FC.

More than 33 years after the Gabon disaster, tributes such as Musonda’s serve as a reminder of the immense talent Zambia lost and of a player whose skill, creativity and passion for the game left a lasting impression on teammates, supporters and the nation’s football history.
