Indiscipline cost Katongo his place in Chipolopolo as details emerge

Details have emerged as to why Chipolopolo skipper Christopher Katongo was expelled fro the team camp with The Post Newspaper stating that he skipped camp rules while the technical bench has tried to downplay the issue stating that he captain was dropped on technical grounds.

And Katongo’s girlfriend confirmed that she spent a night at Mukuba Hotel with the 2012 BBC African Footballer of the Year.

But team manager Lusekelo Kamwambi said Katongo was expelled because of his negative attitude that would affect other players in the team.

Katongo asked his girlfriend, who travelled from Lusaka, to book at the same hotel, and later sneaked into her room for the night. According to the girl, Katongo sneaked into her room at 23:00 hours and spent the night with her.

“Yes, I managed to meet him. He came in the room around 23:30 hours and he slept in my room,” she said.

When asked if she was aware that Katongo had been chased from camp, the girl  said she was surprised because they were both sure that nobody saw him sneak into her room.

“Tapali abamumwene pantu aishile kuma 23:00 hours. Limbi ama roommates ebamuulwile (No one saw him because he came into my room around 23:00 hours. Maybe his roommates reported him to the coach,” she said.

When asked how long Katongo stayed in her room, the girl said: “Achilala mu room mumwandi. Achiya uluchelo kuma 07:30 hours so (He slept in my room and only left around 07:00 hours in the morning).”

But Kamwambi said Katongo was expelled from camp because of insubordination.

“Coach Janza, in a bold move aimed at bolstering team spirit and unity in the Chipolopolo, released captain Christopher Katongo from camp. Janza intends to make drastic changes to the team to face Niger on Wednesday. Therefore, he wished to spare the blushes of the captain arising out of the possible omission from the team,” he said

“No player will be kept in camp as has been the case lately once the final 18 players have been named. This is to avoid negative energy that might affect the team.”

Efforts to get a comment from Katongo proved futile as his phone was unreachable.

Zambia is struggling to qualify to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations with 2 points after recording one loss and two draws from three games played.

  1. So this is reports from Katongos girlfiriend that he spent the night , last night ipresume, with her. What rubbish reporting from the post. They should say how they got these details.

Too much drama around Zambian football, Zambian football creating its own drama. Then Janza… Sad.

  2. I dont think his real girlfriend would give out such information. kamwambi’s version sounds sensible.at this time, i would suggest we forget the chris fiasco and concentrate on the battle ahead, like which players and tactics will yield a positive result for chipolopolo

    • And this will prove what exactly? Limbi mule fwaya another Iris or Bobby East situation to prove what happened in the bedroom. The weekly post is basically a tabloid these days and this story is irrelevant because news of Chris being dropped happened before this sleepover if you look at the timeline of events.

  3. I think this team needs the hunger and creativity of musakanya and lubambo musonda as well as the sudden killer instinct of evans kangwa and sate sate. Janza should use the independence friendly(s) to assemble a new team for the cape verde and mozambique games, which i think will decide who finally goes to morocco

  4. Chris can’t you just wait for few hours, isuna has costed our team. For that matter a married man. The father of four. Your wife will kill you baba, be careful of Lusaka girls. You have yourself to blame now ash! Maybe, that has been is habit, you shift your frustration to girls?

  9. There is no smoke with out fire. This what they use to do with Rena, but time has catch up with him, you can’t hide forever. Lesa nimalyotola he expose where not expected.

  10. I dont care about what led to his expulsion but I know is that Janza made the right decision for once.Chris K was a huge burden to the national team and football fraternity at large. He became an obstruction to the development of Zambian football by scaring the away the young and talented.I aslo believe that he influenced team selection.

  11. I am aware of football coaches who expressly allow their players to have sex during tournaments such as the world cup and still perform better than our under-performing Chipolopolo. Some coaches actually recommend that this act is good for players and deliberate encourage it. Besides, there is no empirical evidence to show any correlation between sex and scoring goals. Why did we fail to score against Mozambique and in Niger or is someone telling us our players sneaked out to sleep with some girls on the eve of the two games game?

  12. This must be the last time chris katongo is coming near to the team as he has marked his own ending. I think its time we emulate South Africa who replaced all old men with young lads and are doing extremely good.

  13. @Rok i usually respect your views but on the Chris issue i will have to disagree with you. Since when did allowing girlfriends into hotel rooms become acceptable. Rules are rules and it doesn’t matter whether you are captain or not, you should be disciplined and in this case sent packing. Since when did Chris become the almighty chief analyst? If he wants to question tactics let him become an analyst rather than questioning his boss. There has been negative energy coming from him from the time we won the cup and it reached its hight when we played Zimbabwe at Levy. You all remember what he told the young Evans. We keep saying he is a fighter, but what had his fighting done for us since Afcon13?. Let us move on fire petes sake, we have been talking about introducing fresh legs all this time but look at the examples these madalas are setting. Lets not takw away anything from Chris, he did us proud but now he has lost form and exhibited indiscipline and he should be disciplined like any other player donning that Jersey. Janza is the boss right now and he should be respected whether we like or not. Mind you i have lost faith in him as well but when it comes to discipline we should be level headed.

  14. @Rok we should also ask Chris why he and his madala friends could not score against Mozambique, Cape Verde and Niger. In fact he should tell us why they have not been scoring since Afcon13. The answer is they are tired and no longer have the zeal

  15. @ROK,Sex,like drinking reduces a person’s ability physically and mentally,am sorry to say this, let’s say Chris went for a unit or a dozen, what can he offer on the pitch the following morning mentally or physically. nothing.if the allegations are true then the coach was right to let go of the captain. The other negative thing I have seen is that our players don’t have respect for local coaches as they have money than them and are coached by better coaches than janza at club level

    • Nice one , nakatemwa ati they don’t have respect for the local coach , which very true and I would rather coach a player who is loyal than a player who is not

  16. Give this janza coach some credit, woe um impressed diverting attention away from himself to katango is either an act of stupidly or genious I think the latter would do in my book, well done janza.

  17. I am not buying the story of the girl friend at all. Even if it were to do with a girl friend, she can not just be that careless telling every jim and jack what they are reporting she said. Moreover this girl/woman should even know that Chris is married. Even if people lose it, after all the deidication and military discipline towards a career can Chris lose it in this manner? I am not believing it.

  18. Forget about the girlfriend story. Who on this forum can question his or her boss in front of workmates? It just shows how indisciplined one is. And for a military person, it was not right. If Chris was not happy about something, he should have sought audience with his coach who is his boss. He even has the balls to say nalibeba ifishinka. If he ain’t happy. Quit!! That is all

  19. CHRIS KATONGO has been one of the most displined Zambian footballers so I find it hard to believe this story but if its true then his behaviour isnt befitting the captain

    • Rather than just complain, why not offer solutions. This mentality is what has held so many people back. People of Zamfoot sacrifice their time and effort to make this happen and all you can do is come here and complain. Some of us are just happy to have a forum where we can interact with our fellow fans from across the world. Take time to appreciate, and if you think it is boring at least bring solutions to the table or make suggestions.

    • Its utterly pathetic to see ‘Arm Chair Critics’ always complain and whine without offering credible solutions to problems. This site is run by passionate volunteers using there own resources so that we all have a fora to discuss football. And there you are with your egocentric good for nothing sentiments demeaning other peoples effort.

Go form your own site and lets see how you will fare. Pathetic

  20. This is what we were trying to avoid when we asked him to hang up his boots earlier, its unfortunate that one of the most if not the most successful chipolopolo captain has to end his career like this. if i where Janza i would have taken the same decision… in times like these you direct all your energies towards training and the match not sharing it with concubines. shame 2012 champ!

  21. Maybe the guy refused to pay for services rendered, could be the reason why the ATM (assistant to the madam) had to spill the beans, after all Chris is human like all of us but the magnitude of his act is made worse by the timing and also that he is a role model and captain of the chipolopolo panchito Pena awe!

  22. @ Armed Gunman, I just hope you are married so that you can understand me ok. Girlfriends can destroy you and your family the only person who can cover you is your wife, that’s why girlfriends can have guards to insult your own wife on the phone. @ Rok sex can reduce your physical ability like what my bro Mike has indicated.that is one of the reasons teams go into camp.

    • Germston South I hear you,but I still can’t buy it going by the “public” social discipline of Chris over the years. I am very much married by the way and I understand how some wives can save their husbands though some “awe” sure – just recently some very senior man was sentenced to five years imprisonment after the wife spilled the beans of him stealing Government money.

  23. zamfoot the story u provided under Zambianfootball kickoff. on facebook is more detailed than this. y didnt u provide the same story?.

  26. Please! lets hope our team is just focused on the game than this nonsense of katongo this katongo that. I for one want our country to develope our own coaches than paying these fools from whatever they come from just to come and milk us. Bravo Janza and ba katongo please work on it my bro we still need you in zambia football you can do more other than just playing for the nation.

  27. Ba zamfoot dot make stories wich are fake tamukwete ifyakucita katongo he has done that useless muletomona abaice we understand that he has been dropte think about tomorry game

  28. One thing i like about Christopher Katongo is his straight talk. He might not be perfect but i just love his frankness. He calls a spade a spade and not a big spoon. It’s a pity that PATHETIC and DISGRACED Honour Janza does not want to be told the truth because it hurts. Chasing Christopher Katongo is not the solution. FAZ is rotten and stinks with corruption. They are deep rooted problems which we need to find solutions too.

  29. PATHETIC and USELESS Honor Janza should not use Christopher Katongo for his failures to manage the team. He is the causer of all this division in the team. The players have no zeal, no drive nothing because of his style of management. We will not qualify to AFCON with this chap as coach.

  30. This is a post i have just read on facebook by Mafuto Kalupa.

    NALIBEBA ICHISHINKA ( I TOLD
    THEM THE TRUTH) – CHRISTOPHER
    KATONGO
    Zambia National team skipper
    Christopher Katongo has been
dropped from the squad to take
    on Niger this Wednesday.
Asked what led to his fall out, the
    team captain says “nalibeba
ichishinka” (I told them the truth)
, in a telephone interview with
    Mwix Soccer 24. Katongo says
    “walishiba Ichishinka chilakalipa,
    nali bengilila noku beba
    ichishinka (You know the truth
hurts, I told them the truth).
    Twalalolela pa Wednesday baka
wine bakaye naku Africa Cup (We
    will wait for Wednesday, they
should win and qualify to the
    Africa Cup).
    Ichishinka chikafuma choonse
    nombaline, apa Twalalolela bola
pa Wednesday. ( the whole truth
will come out soon, for now let’s
    wait for the game on
    Wednesday.
    Inside sources revealed to Mwix
    24 that one goalkeeper trainer
has been calling the shots to
    have Katongo dropped from the
    squad after the 2012 captain
    allegedly made comments and
    offered advice that was deemed
    as belittling the technical bench.
    The unnamed goalkeeper trainer
is also believed to have had a
hand in the exclusion of Mukuka
    Mulenga, Fwayo Tembo, Collins
    Mbesuma, Joseph Musonda and
    Felix Katongo the source
    revealed.
efforts to get a comment from
    the techinical bench proved
    futile.
Katongo is now in Lusaka at his
    Salama park Mansion.
    Via Mwix Soccer 24.

  31. To the boys in camp eyes on the game tomorrow forget about Chris. I hope guys like F.Katongo, C. Mbesuma, J. Chamanga can also be retired the can’t play forever. When are we going to see L. Musonda, P.Daka, E. Kangwa and Alex Ngonga who I feel is the best striker in Zed at the moment.
As long as we continue playing mandalas these young boys will never get a chance to play. I hope the Zulu boy will again tomorrow. I think Chris was pissed off to see the young man play and him sit on the bench. Smell the coffee your time is up. Though thank you for being a good leader in the past but you became big headed bwana.

  32. I am far from believing this story. Its fake meant to turnish Katongo’s image. Katongo is a disciplined soldier who observes military ethics and apply them in his discourse. I believe the post newspaper has scores to settle with him. This newspaper is more evil than the devil himself. Anyway, we will all learn the truth at the end of it.

  33. We all know how disgruntled the Post Newspaper is. They are now a headless chicken. Their lies how now moved from politics to sport.

  34. Sometimes zambians talk too much zambia will qualify for the africa cup in morocco. Niger will lose tomorrow. Cape verde and zambia will got through.

  35. Some stories kaya ma ” it wanst me na mu football sure”. Chris and Janza have had issues and we all know this, therefore this story is rubbish. What proof does the post have?

Bola pa Zambia is in serious problems and it started at the last AFCON. We will be very lucky if we qualify

  36. IT is surprising that while the under17 and under 20 have been doing well, the main team has serious problems. 2 points out a possible 8 or 9 points is not good enough for a country like Zambia. There is something very wrong. Just where are the people who are supposed to take corrective measures? What is FAZ doing about all this? As usual waiting for Kambwili to remind them there is something wrong

It is really a pity for us Zambian soocer fans as this is really paining most of us. Awe twanaka nomba mwe, today this mailo that, Kaya. Teti ne minwe yaku sosha ku kulemba pali keyboard

  37. It’s not katongo to be dropped but Janza himself.what has Janza got to prove as his advancement but katongo has it all. Don’t be jelous you Janza and your coaching staff.I look forward to katongo been a Zambian coach

  38. This is the best decision Janza has ever made since taking over as coach.
He has had a great team
    He talented individual players
    Great support from FAZ.
    Great support from GRZ
Great support from the football fans- (at least from the time he was hired)
Great support from his Family but he only lucked asserting his leadership on the team and I strongly believe with tis decision- Ask Chris out of camp for whatever reason- this will work well for him- the Team will now play according to him as a leader.
I see great results coming today!

  39. Justice Lukanga Kafusha, i totally agree with your points. It is so ironic that our junior teams are doing so well and have qualified to their respective tournaments and yet the national team is struggling to qualify to AFCON in a group full of average teams. It seems FAZ has stopped thinking and have completely run out of ideas. They are waiting for Chishimba Kambwili to give them a KICK ASS again!

  40. The story is tabloid BS to say the least. Is this the low levels newspaper reporting in Zambia has degenerated to…..

Anyway gents on another note could we rather discuss the best tactical approach we need to employ for todays game. I honestly think the long ball tactic has never worked for us we need to play our standard ball on the ground, short passing game. with buildups to the centre forwards. We should also revert back to the traditional 4-4-2 formation. the lone striker approach has not worked and has only yielded one goal in three games evidence that it is not a formation our players are familiar with.

  41. Big Steve 4rm SA, it’s a pity that we have a coach that does not seem to know what he is doing. This team has become unrecognizable. We don’t seem to have a game play, no system, no cohesion, no chemistry, NOTHING what so ever. Janza probably does not even know what a 4-4-2 formation is!

  42. @Big Steve 4rm SA, Kay Hammer guys you are correct. We need a more attack minded approach and but the coach is blank and very naive. Niger is not a team we can fail to beat even away. We should have won that game but alas, people are now hiding in CK.
The Post is a disgrace and quoting them here is wrong by Zamfoot who has sources in camp and can get accurate information for us.
Fire Janza after this game whether we win or lose.

  43. I agree with Big Steve. The quality of reporting in the CK issue is sooooo embarassing. This is supposed to be Sunday tabloid material. Are sports reporters in Zambia that lazy that they cant properly investigate a story and get facts from reliable sources. I also didnt expect Zamfoot to simply copy and paste the story from the Post.Shame!

Anyways all the best for Zambia.

  44. Sometimes we should also pay attention to the way we prepare for certain games. Prior to playing Niger, the Menas, we were busy beating K-Stars 8-0 during the first game and 11-0 during the second game. I do not think K-Stars is the quality you can play against even if it is a preparatory game. A Premier league team would have provided better training.
However, that is now water under the bridge as we await to watch today’s game.

  45. @Big Steve. Definitely see your point. The idea of playing Singuluma behind Chamanga did not work at all. Needless to say Chamanga’s inability to hold on to the ball was a major factor. Also Chisamba needs to be employed on the wings and not in the centre, granted the expectation was for him to receive more balls but that clearly didn’t work.

Also the number of passes to the playmaker in which case is Kalaba need to be upped. I honestly dont know the best permutation, but given the names available. A strike partnership of Jacob and Chamanga would make sense. These are the only strikers on this team with any real gametime experience. They are also the only strikers with goals at club level in the national team. Which is sad to be honest, and maybe there in lies our current dilema. The team selection has left much to be desired. Janza also seems to lack a philosophy or even a real tactical identity for the team. The team I saw under Patrice had way more impetus and zeal than what we are seeing now.
