The Zambian football family has been hit with a big loss following the passing of Former FAZ general secretary George Kasengele.

Kasengele who is fondly called GK in football circles died in the early hours of today at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka following an illness.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has also joined the football family in mourning Kasengele through a statement by Media and Communications manager Sydney Mungala.

FAZ President, Andrew Kamanga, says the country has been robbed of a man who continuously contributed to the game.

“On behalf of the FAZ executive committee and the entire football family, we mourn the loss of our dear brother and comrade in sports Mr. George Kasengele,” Kamanga said.

“Football has been robbed of one of its long-serving members who contributed to the game to the very last days of his life.”

“Mr. Kasengele was memorably part of the August 14, 2019, football indaba ta Hilton Hotel where former presidents, general secretaries, life members, and ex-players met to brainstorm on the future of the Zambian game,” he added.

Meanwhile, 1988 African footballer of the year, Kalusha Bwalya has also joined the football family in mourning his friend.

Kalusha formed a formidable duo at Football House and it was during their work together that Zambia achieved its biggest feet in Men’s football, winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012.

The former FAZ supremo took to social media to express his sorrow and grief following GK’s untimely demise.

“The end of an era………..my heart is shattered.

George Mwila Kasengele, you were my brother, my friend, and my colleague. An oak tree has fallen. I will never forget you GK. You shall forever live amongst us. You were like an administration machine. Your writing skills coupled with your infinite wisdom of corporate governance and leadership were second to none.
A real warrior of a man. You and I come a long way. I will miss you, my brother. My sincere condolences to the Family and friends and the Zambian football family. Till we meet again.”

Kasengele served in the Profound Warriors (now NAPSA Stars) Executive committee before being elected FAZ committee member in 1997 under the Teddy Mulonga executive committee.

He went on to be appointed General Secretary in 2008 during the reign of Kalusha Bwalya.
