Green Eagles fly-past Orlando Pirates to progress in Champions League

Green Eagles have progressed to the 1st round of the CAF Champions League after being held to a 1 – 1 draw by Orlando Pirates in the second leg of the preliminary round of the 2019/20 tournament at Orlando Stadium in South Africa.

The Choma based side who are making a debut appearance in the Champions League progressed on a 2 – 1 aggregate scoreline having won the first leg 1 – 0 in Lusaka.

It was a resilient performance by the Aggrey Chiyangi side as they had to hold their own despite the incessant attacks from the hosts that saw Sebastian Mwange in goal pull off save after save.

The game was tied at 0 – 0 at half time but once the Buccaneers had made changes in the second half, they looked a better side going forward.

Substitute Dlamini hit the upright in the 59th minute but Happy Jele made no mistake when he rose high to head home from a corner a minute later.

Eagles picked themselves up and went on to score the equalizer less than a minute after the restart when Spencer Sautu found Amit Shamende in the box. Shamende neatly finished with a first time shot that placed the ball beyond the reach of Wayne Sandiland.

It was an uphill road for the hosts from then on and despite bringing the exciting Augustine Mulenga who had started on the bench they could not beat Sebastian Mwange who was in fine form keeping out the shots.

Lorch however came close when his shot beat Mwange but he was unfortunate to see it canon off the upright in the 76th minute.

Chiyangi saw out the game with a good defensive display for the Zambia National Service sponsored to set up a date with Primerio de Agosto of Angola in the first round.
