Zesco United on Sunday evening made history by becoming the first Zambian club to qualify to the semi finals of the CAF Champions league with a game to spare.
The Zambian champions were handed passage to the last four after Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca beat Asec Mimosa 2 – 1, a result which meant that Wydad and Zesco qualify to the semi finals.
The George Lwandamina coached side face Wydad Casablanca in Ndola in the final round of the group stage on 19th August in a game that will decide who tops the group.
Wydad currently lead the group on 10 points while Zesco have amassed 8 points.
Al Ahly have 5 points but Ndola side have a better head to head result if the two teams were to be tied on 8 points.
There is a possibility of an all Southern African semi-final if Zesco finish second as they would play Africa’s top ranked team Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa which has Kennedy Mweene in its ranks.
Mayuka’s Zamalek are in pole position to take second spot in group B.

Zesco has become the real TEAM YA ZIKO.
Zesco has now become the real TEAM YA ZIKO.
I hope Zega beat Wydad so that we can have an all southern African final and not semi final. I truly hope we can meet Sundowns in the final.
Is Kennedy Mweene still with Sundowns ? Please Mweene leave that team
Beating Wydad is a big ask. I saw them when ZESCO played them – highly technical, rarely waste chances and very skilful strikers. I hate to say that they are a cut above Zesco. To beat them, we have to be highly organized with a serious sense of purpose. Don’t give them a chance to play their game otherwise you will be sorry.
Yet many didn’t think ZESCO would be in this position! ZESCO has momentum and will win their last game 😉
2012 Chipolopolo beat CIV for the cup…as long as the right conditions are in place, anything is possible…
CONGRATULATIONS ZESCO FOR MAKING ZAMBIA PROUD,WE ARE PROUD OF YOU,REMEMBER THE SKY IS THE LIMIT.
Zesco…..team ya ziko indeed…that cletus boy z a marvel to watch.
Thanks for the great achievement zesco,This is realy super as it will let even other zambian clubs work harder.Go go go zesco
If only Zesco can go all the way 2 the final then it will b a big motivation 2 these othr useless clubs apart 4rm ba Mighty 2 take caf seriously.#WordUpZesco
Well done ZESCO keep up with the momentum!
In Chloorkop we believe in WINNING, but not just WINNING, but WINNING in STYLE, so let the games continue. The YELLOW NATION aka the indomatible champions of South African premiership football Mamelodi Sundowns F.C will soar like eagles to new heights cause The Sky Is The Limit!
At this stage, it does not matter which team is on Downs path, the ultimate goal is glory, lifting the tropy
I would love ZESCO to meet Mamelodi sundown in the semi final. They will be much easier to beat than the north africans.
What a Heading!!!!! Wydad Casablanca hand ZESCO ……..!!!!. Where was ZESCO when Casablanca brought them the qualification? seated in Ndola drinking Coffee, or Chibuku for that matter?.
I think ZESCO sweated blood for this qualification, some players were injured other’s suspended, they trained and played their lungs out, then you say somebody handed them a qualification? It is actually ZESCO who should receive the praise not somebody else.
Congratulations ZESCO from a Kabwe Warriors supporter since 1977.
word! the lads deserve all the credit.
@Kasama Boy well spoken my bro. Zesco qualified by playing their hearts out. No one gave a chance of coming out of this Group. Not even me to be honest. Well done. The Heading is misleading.
Congrats ZEGA.!! Mind you they might even finish top of their Group if they beat Wydad Casablanca. And then the script might change…..

gud lack to zesco now zambia wil send 4 represetatives in caf games next year!
@ Sibs. No one gave them the chance to come out of the group except myself. I even mentioned the fact that quite a number of the youngsters in your league are maturing and playing decent football. As for Cletus Chama I once made mention of the fact that he is such a good player who is most likely to go abroad after the CAF champions league.I went on to liken him to one wasted but deadly Zambian striker who once plied his trade with Extension Gunners of Botswana. His name is Francis Chisenga.
As for other players I once talked about as having a bright future is Evans Kangwa. In him I see the next Benni Mc Carthy.
Rest assured that mighty Zambia will rise again.
@Sly, when I saw the lineup of our group, it was difficult to be optimistic. All our opponents had won the Champions league before except for Zesco. Names like Al Ahly were scary. I only started believing after our game against Al Ahly in Ndola, but I still asked myself whether we would replicate that performance away. We were beaten fair and square by Wydad ( we should have played a 3:5:1 formation) but we went all out for a punch for punch fight – mistake ! It cost us. By the way, thanks for the Francis “Diego” Chisenga memory. We always produce such kind at Mighty but we always get robbed. Keep track of our latest production – Jacob Ngulube, now snatched by Kalampa.
Zambia stalls Gordon Igesund’s appointment as national team coach
Gordon Igesund is still waiting to hear back from the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) over the vacant head coach role with the senior national team.
Igesund was interviewed for the post earlier this month and reports out of Zambia suggested he was the leading candidate‚ with some quoting unnamed FAZ sources as saying the job would be offered to the former Bafana Bafana coach.
But there has yet to be any indication of the same to Igesund‚ nor any contract negotiations opened by FAZ.
“As we stand there is no offer on the table‚” Igesund’s agent Mike Makaab said.
“He was interviewed by them [FAZ] and the only feedback we have had to date is that they are considering him.
◾ Irvin Khoza talks tough to new Orlando Pirates coach Muhsin Ertugral
“But I am hopeful that we will know something more concrete either way by the start of next week.”
Should Igesund get the job it would mean he takes up a post he was first touted for 15 years ago when he was sounded out over a caretaker role with Zambia in 2001.
Other coaches short-listed for the post include former Ghana tactician Goran Stevanovic‚ Frenchman Sebastein Desabre and Swiss national Raoul Savoy.
Igesund has been out of a job since he was axed by SuperSport United in January.
He is one of the most successful coaches in South Africa after winning four league titles with four different sides‚ including unfashionable Manning Rangers and Santos.
◾ Top 8 victory ambitions still alive for Downs
He also lifted the league trophy with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
The former winger finished runner-up in the league as well with Ajax Cape Town and Moroka Swallows‚ after which he was appointed Bafana coach in 2012 after several near-misses in the past.
He failed to qualify the side for the 2014 Fifa World Cup and also exited from the 2013 African Nations Cup finals at the quarterfinal stage on home soil.
His finest moment with the national team came in a 1-0 friendly win over then world champions Spain.

The morocans er getting this cup nd they re playing zesco in the finals again
Get me right, Zesco is a dangerous side. Wydad might as well fall in Zambia.
