Zesco beat Zanaco to extend lead as Buildcon win Ndola derby

An injury time goal from Simon Silwimba propelled Zesco United to a 2-1 win over Zanaco as the Ndola side extended their lead at the top to 7 points.

Moses Phiri gave the bankers a lead in the 35th minute from a free kick.

After the break, Adrian Chama scored from the spot to equalize for the eight times Zambian Champions. The penalty was awarded after Boyd Musonda’s reckless challenge on Silwimba left the referee with no choice but to point to spot kick.

Zanaco coach Chris Kaunda brought on Siakombo and Chisamba Lungu to add flair to his side and this almost paid off as the bankers dominated again.

Agianst the run of play, it was former Zanaco players; Fackson Kapumbu and Winstone Kalengo who combined to tee off Silwimba for the winning goal.

Zesco United stretched their lead to 43 points with Zanaco still second on 36 points.

Power Dynamos is third on 34 points.

Trivial: Winstone Kalengo, Simon Silwimba (both Zesco United), Chisamba Lungu (Zanaco), Henry Banda (Zanaco assistant coach) and Numba Mumamba (Zesco United coach) featured in the same Zanaco side in the mid 2000s.

Fackson Kapumbu also made his professional debut at Zanaco from Winford Academy.

Fackson v Kelvin: The Kapumbu brothers came head to head again in this blockbuster tie. Both players have been capped for Zambia.

FULL TIME: Zesco United 2-1 Zanaco
(Adrian Chama 57′ (pen), Silwimba 92’+2 | Moses Phiri 35′)
