Copper Queens captain Barbra Banda says Zambia is out to make amends after falling short at the last TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the team targeting nothing less than the title in Morocco.
Banda says the team’s ambition is to return home as African champions while booking another place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“Honestly, the way it ended last time we were not happy but I think this time around we want to do more and definitely to qualify to the World Cup and win the WAFCON,” Banda said.
She was speaking to FAZ Media on Tuesday ahead of Zambia’s final pre-WAFCON friendly against Algeria at the Mustapher Tchaker Stadium in Blida.
Banda said the players also want to honour the memory of late former head coach Bruce Mwape by bringing the trophy home.
“I feel like as a team we just need to pull up our socks and maybe probably win this WAFCON for each and every one and looking at the loss that we have for coach Bruce, we are trying to do something great for him so that maybe wherever he’s, for sure he could be happy with us,” Banda said.
The Copper Queens skipper says the mood in camp remains high despite joining the squad later than some of her teammates.
She explained that everyone was focused on the task ahead and eager to continue preparations.
The Copper Queens are in Algiers for a week-long training camp and will leave for Morocco on Thursday.
Zambia drew 1-1 with Algeria in the first friendly and will face the North Africans again on Wednesday.
