Zambia U17 Women’s National Team winger Lilian Mwenda says it’s a dream come true to be part of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup provisional squad.
Mwenda was named in Coach Carol Kanyemba’s 28 member provisional squad for the World Cup .
The 14 year old is excited to achieve her dream of being part of the Copper Princesses squad.
She says the team is working hard and preparations are going on well as they want to go and showcase good football at the global showpiece.
“Firstly I just want to thank God for this. I feel very happy because this has been my dream since I was a kid. I worked hard for this,” she said.
“We are preparing very well.We are working hard, everyone is working hard, we want to make sure that when we go to the World Cup we go and play good football. People should know that Zambia also plays good football.”
Mwenda made her debut in the Women’s Super League on 16th August and she is happy to be playing with Copper Queens’ superstars like Margaret Belemu.
“It’s been a nice journey, playing with people like Ochumba Oseke Lubanji, Margaret Belemu and the like. It’s a very good experience, being on the pitch is very fun,” she said.
Zambia will be making their second appearance at the U17 World Cup and will battle Japan, Poland and Brazil in Group D of the eighth edition of the global attraction.
“Those are good teams. They are good at playing the ball, but we just need to work on our tactical approach because we have endurance, speed and strength hence when we fine tune our tactical approach it will be difficult to beat us,” she said.
The tournament will be held in the Dominican Republic from 16 October – 4 November, 2024.
The Copper Princesses will open their campaign against Brazil on 18 October 2024 at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo before their penultimate group phase match against Poland three days later at the same stadium.
They will wrap up their group match against Japan on 23 October, 2024.
