Throwback Thursday – Egypt beat Zambia in Olympic qualifier

29.10.1983, Nasser Stadium, Cairo.
Olympic Games Qualifier.
Egypt 2 – 0 Zambia.

Ace wrote about the game –

Zambia had won the first leg at Independence Stadium two weeks earlier [1-0, late header by Peter Kaumba off an Alex Chola free-kick] but came unstuck in the second leg 2-0 to bow out of the running and the Pharaohs went on to represent Africa at USA ’84 Olympics.

Fighton Simukonda played at right back while the two Musondas (Michael and Emmy) were in central defence and John ‘Libya’ Kalusa was at left back. Kalu came on as a sub for Kaumba in the second half. This was not his first game for Zambia, not even the first leg. His debut came earlier in the year against Sudan in a CAN qualifier in Ndola which ended 0-0.

The Egyptian player could be Mahmoud El Khatib, who scored the first goal.

Dewenga named the players as –

Micheal Musonda, Fighton Simukonda and Emmie Musonda with Efford Chabala in goal.

  1. Dewenga is right. Zambian players from left to right: Efford, Fighton, Michael Musonda & Emmy Musonda. The opponents were Egypt but can someone name the Egyptian player, the game and final scoreline?

  2. This was a good kit by Zambia. What has gone wrong now wearing ma pitikoti material not properly designed. lets bring back some good zambian jersies like the one in picture but also in national colours.

    • That’s true Ba Kafusha, Kalu and Wisdom made their Debuts on the same game, two small players and slim too, I watched that first leg as a eleven year old boy.

  3. This was a Return Match between Zambia and Egypt in 1983. First game ended 1:0 in favour of Zambia via a free kick taken by Alex Chola and scored by Peter Kaumba. Wisdom Chansa and Kalusha were the only under 20 gradutes who made their debuts. The Return Match ended 2:0 in favour of Egypt. Zambia coach was Wieslay Graboskwi

  4. 29.10.1983, Nasser Stadium, Cairo. Olympic Games Qualifier. Egypt 2 – 0 Zambia.

Zambia had won the first leg at Independence two weeks earlier as Justice says [1-0, late header by Peter Kaumba off an Alex Chola free-kick] but came unstuck in the second leg 2-0 to bow out of the running and the Pharaohs went on to represent Africa at USA ’84 Olympics.

I think the Egyptian player is Mahmoud El Khatib, who scored the first goal. Hossam Hassan would only make his debut for Egypt 2 years later.

  6. @Ace is spot on about the details of the game. The only players i can spot are E.Chabala in goal and “Big” Fighton Simukonda and E.Musonda on the far right.

Kalus debut was against Sudan at Daggy 1982. A game lost on goal difference after the late Alex Chola missed a penalty.

    • Not a good day for Alex “Computer” Chola as apart from missing a penalty another goal bound Kaumba shot with keeper beaten hit Chola’s lega pa goal line and bounced back into play!

  7. This must be 1984 the fact Chabala was in goal. This is the game we won 1-0 Iin Cairo coetesy of an Asiouls Melu Free kick. The team went to celebrate by drinking with the coach who was upon arrival fired by KK.I can see Jack Chanda and Jones Chilengi in the picture.

    • Hell no! Jack Chanda and Jones Chilengi aren’t in that picture. The game Melu scored a freekick was a friendly at Independence in our 2-0 win with abaiche Pearson Mwanza, Simon Mwansa and Geoffrey “Freejoe” Mulenga featuring. Those in the picture are without a shadow of doubt Efford yes, Big Figh (not Chilengi), Michael Musonda (not Jack Chanda) bakalamba ba Kopala!

    • Never mind we were also once there but never acted as Losers (Quit when they fail) but as Winners (Fail until they succeed) and used our LEG (Learn, Earn and Give) to be sharing this knowledge (the time when knowledge is power is when you share it)!
