From Top left Timothy Mwitwa, Deby Makinka, Maybin Mugaiwa Robert Watyakeni, Eford Chabala, Eston Mulenga, Asshiols Melu, Squating from left Watson Changwe, Samuel Chomba, John Soko and Kalusha Bwalya

    • You have almost hit the nail on it’s head. It is from AFCON 92, where Zambia were beaten by Ghana 1-0, through a cracking Abedi Pele shoot from outside the D-zone that gave no chance to late Efford Chabala (late MHSRIP)

I watched all the games Zambia played including the win over Egypt

A point of correction is the player standing after Derby Makinka, that is late Webby Chikabala formerly of Vitafoam, Nchanga Rangers and Maritimo of Portugal

      Cheers my man

    • Correction. Standing Top left to right, Timothy Mwitwa,Derby Makinka,Webster Chikabala, Linos Makwaza,Efford Chabala,Estone Mulenga and Ashios Melu. Then squating from left to right, Whiteson Changwe, Samuel Chomba, John Soko and Great Kalu.

    • Makwaza is not in the image above though he was in the trup to the finals. The coach was the late ba Zoom

Standing: Timothy, makinka., chikabala, Watiyakeni, chabala, Eston, melu.
Squatting. Changwe chomba soko kalu Senegal 92

  2. AFCON 1992 SENEGAL

Standing left to right: Timothy Mwitwa, Derby Makinka, Webster Chikabala, Robert Watyakeni, Efford Chabala, Eston Mulenga, Ashios Melu,
Squatting left to right: Whiteson Changwe, Samuel Chomba, John Soko, Kalusha Bwalya.

  3. King Kalu is always on every Throwback picture….. and is still most talked about…. To all you late sons of mother Zambia what you fought for since 1964 your captain then managed to bring it in 2012. You went knowing him as a great player and bet right now you are smiling that he is A good FA president Zambia has ever had since in memorial. He will take us to the world we believe…..

  4. Billy is right, though slightly obscured, that is Linos Makwaza not Watyakeni. However, in the later games (should’ve been Quarter final game against Cote D’Ivoire) Watyakeni did play.

    • Agreed:

It is true Chikabala played in the first game vs Egypt and was used as a sub in the next 1 or 2 games. Watiyakeni came in as sub in the game vs Ghana

The 1/4 final game was vs Ivory Coast who beat us 1-0. Ivory Coast went on to win 11-10 on penalties vs Ghana

  5. Yes, after Chikabala it is Makwaza.
That game which Zambia (KK 11) lost to Ghana via an Abedi Pele goal, was really a tight game.

  6. I have the game on vhs, i have to check one of these days but i dont remember him playing. It was bad game, zambia only scored one goal in the whole tournament. There was no Charlie cool either.

    • And only conceded 2 goals because then we had few teams. 3 Teams in a group in First round, two qualifying to quarter finals from 4 groups!

  7. the only goal was scored by kalu. nicely chested it down dawn though it looked like a handball, maybe its because I was watching it on black and white with showers on the screen since the aerial was outside.

  8. I was in the village by then , I didn’t even know how a TV set looked like. Came to start watching TV in 1993 on April 2, I can’t forget that one.

  9. It is Makwaza indeed I was just one month into my new Job when these guys perished and I knew ba Melu and Kalu’s Family personally in Mufulira when I was transferred there. I also met Makwaza in Kitwe including tenant Chilumba and some of the current FAZ officials. I, too, Ba Kashimoto personally.

  10. That’s definitely Linos Makwaza. I remember him from watching the game against Morocco when he got subbed for Munaile in the early exchanges because he got kicked in the nose, and also his cracking goal in the next game against st SA when we beat them 3-0 pa independence stadium

  11. This blog is quite interesting and people are making me look very aged, very ancient and like a national archive. Mu 1992 some of you were 4 and may be younger, or still unborn? Interesting- no wonder we have such an array of blogs, the envy of every blogger from around the continent.

I should change my blog name from Kasama Boy to Kasama Shikulu Bantu pantu in 1992, specifically on 2nd July, I returned with a Master’s Degree in Architecture after 2 years of study in Finland.

When those dear lovely souls perished a year later, I was in Lusaka. I cried like a baby. More from my love of soccer, the players themselves and patriotism.

The Finland that I went to and the Finns I met, made one realise he was a foreigner, a black and almost like a pest in their country. (Suffice to say we were only 13 Zambians-called there for studies by their President Koivisto, a very close friend of KK-All in all there were almost 100 Africans most of who had entered the country as refugees from Somalia, especially after being chased from Russia after its economy went down under perestroika).

This strengthened my love for mother Zambia, and has since made me a very proud Zambian and a true and full blooded Chipolopolo. Win or Lose.

  12. Kasama Boy I clearly understand your cries with regard to how you were treated in Finland. It boils down to exposure. Some people only know their small world. And they are not willing to experience change.

  13. @ba Kasama shikulu bantu, I 4 one enjoy this segiment coz i learn a lot and its interestin 2 see tht Zambia once had a jersey which made them look like Orlando Pirates and i hv been seeing sum awful lookin past jerseys a lot has changed kanshi.
