Were shines as Zesco embarass Blackpool

Zesco United moved to within a point of log leader Nkana FC after they electrocuted visiting Mufulira Blackpool with a screaming 5 – 0 scoreline thanks to a double brace by Kenyan international Jesse Were.

The Champions who have a 100% record having won 5 out of 5 games were in an uncompromising mood at Levy Mwanawasa stadium  with Were taking full responsibility in attack in the absence of Idriss Mbombo to score two on each side of the half with Clatous Chama scoring on each side of the half.

Were is now on seven goals with seven goals in five league games but has two more goals for Zesco scored in the champions league.

The heavy loss has seen Blackpool drop to the bottom of the log with only three points from seven games.

At Nkoloma stadium in Lusaka, Matthews Phiri named teenage striker Joseph Phiri who is straight from the amateur ranks in the starting line-up as Red Arrows edged visiting Green Eagles.

With national team call-ups Benedict Chepeshi and Paul Katema were both on the bench for the ZAF sponsored side it was Phiri who looked the most threatening going forward for Arrows. The diminutive striker was unlucky to see his shot in the 5th minute just miss the upright.

Winger Stanley Nshimbi benefited from a good cross on the right to slot home from within the box and he could have added another with a solo run on the left minutes later.

Chepeshi and Katema both got a run on the field of play in the second half while Spencer Sautu and Adamson Mulao who are also expected to join the Chipolopolo local’s camp had fair games though they will feel their team was unlucky not to get a point away.

The loss for the Choma based team sees them drop into the relegation zone.

At Independence stadium, the pressure continues to mount on Power Dynamos coach Tenant Chilumba after he saw his side give away a 1 – 0  lead to lose 2 – 1.

Martin Phiri opened the scores before Lottie Phiri equalized for the Army side. Sebastian Mwansa completed the come back for GBFC.

With two back to back wins, Buffaloes now move into 5th position with Power dropping from 5th to 6th.

There are unconfirmed reports that Chilumba was harassed by angry fans.

Nkwazi have continued their good run of form and this time they managed to pick maximum points on the road against Forest Rangers with a 1 – 0 scoreline.

Kalaba Chikwanda scored the only goal of the match when he benefited from a poorly cleared long throw-in to shoot home from within the box.

Graven Chitalu saw his penalty saved by the Nkwazi goalie in the 65th minute.

The win sends Nkwazi into third position while Rangers remain in relegation.

Napsa Stars finally moved off the foot of the log and out of the relegation zone on goal difference with a win slender 1 – 0 win over 10th placed Kabwe Warriors.

Matthews Macha scored the only goal of the match taking his tally to 3 for the season.

  1. Yaba power ama neighbors l like feel the job with that former maite coach waiting around Ndeke like a vulture, kaya by Monday.

  2. The Were story could be telling us a sad story about the Zambian strikers. Maybe it implies that Zambia is not producing good strikers because most likely if it was then the Kalengo replacement could have been a Zambian. Anyone can guess why Zesco grabbed Were and Mbombo.

Besides , the story definitely says a lot about the Zesco midfieders. They are creating scoring chances in abundance hence good strikers like Were and Mbombo would thrive. I wonder if the same can be said about other Zambian side’s midfielders?

    • Valid points @slys. It all comes down to hoping to reap where we have not sown. We’re not investing enough in talent development. By the time we realise that player x or y is has potential, they’re already already in their twenties, if not thirties. Unfortunately, we seem to be looking for “quick fix solutions” instead of long term sustainable programs.

  3. @Paddy forget about Charly Musonda, his father is unpatriotic even in his playing days.People were saying that because he is not in good relation with Kalu but here we are, where is kalu?

  4. nazo word those chaps r unpatriotic they made everyone believe it was kalu who didn’t want the boy.back to ZSL zesco are the team watch this space.

  5. Zesco played some wonderful football on Saturday. That is what we want to see;Bola panshi not the usual Zambian chidunu. I liked the fact that Forest Rangers and Nkwazi also spent more time passing the ball than throwing it to whom it may concern. I think there should be a prize for the most accurate passer of the ball and the end of season.

  6. Zesco missed a lot of chances in yesterday’s game,Lwandamina needs to polish up his strikers if they are to qualify for the caf champion league semi finals. Were is an average player who just benefited from good and creative midfielders.let’s encourage our local strikers to perform well if they are to make it big in their football careers not ukubapyishamo!

  7. i once said FAZ should hav investigated MUFULIRA blackpools qualification to super league. kalulushi modern stars deserved to be in super league this year. reasons blackpools last game should hav bin investigated:
    1. their game started 45minutes after the scheduled time
    2. they were behind modern stars on goal difference and the game was delayed.
    3. the other team was doin nothing wen they scored 5 goal

i dont pity blackpool. u will reap wat u sow.kikikik

  8. Point of correction ba Zamfoot: Jesse Were has scored two goals in the champions league. He scored one goal when Zesco beat Horoya 4-1. He also scored a goal when Zesco beat Stade Malien 2-1.

  9. Lewandowski,a Polish player shining in Germany, realistically, are you saying there is something wrong with german football..don’t underate
