Patson, Mwepu kick-off season with win

Patson Daka and Enock Mwepu were both in action for their Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg when they beat Rapid Wien 2 – 0 on the opening day of the season.

Daka was named in the starting line-up leading the line with 19 year old Norwegian Erling Haland playing just behind him.

Salzburg scored their goals on either side of the half through Minamino in the 35th minute and substitute Okugawa who scored in the 82nd minute – two minutes after coming on for Haland.

The 20 year old Daka looked dangerous with his runs through the centre of attack and was only denied by the brilliance of the Rapid Wien goalkeeper. He was substituted in the 62nd minute.

Mwepu on the other hand came on in the 71st minute. He was deployed on the right side of midfield before switching into a more defensive position on the left.

The Austrian champions will now focus on the Europa League game against Chelsea on Wednesday.

  1. Good start for the two young men at Salzburg. They are really in a great place there. The new coach is from the USA and played soccer at my alma mater — go Princeton Tigers! Big news today in Belgium where Fashion Sakala came on as a sub and scored the game winner. In Russia, Lameck Banda got a chance to play a little at the end of the match. I am wondering, though, what has happened to Evans Kangwa. He did not make the squad today nor did he make it for Arsenal Tula’s Europa League qualifier on Thursday. Is he injured?

    • Evans is injured. Its clear he has worked his way up the selection ladder and is always in the first team when available for selection
