OPINION | IS POWER DYNAMOS A SLEEPING GIANT?

“Aba Yellow” is what the faithful fans call their beloved Power 90. Power Dynamos has always been tipped to be among the best if not the best Zambian Super League team with a flowless beautiful passing game.

However, their beautiful passing game has not brought so much success in their trophy cabinet in the recent past. With another trophy-less season that started on a promising note under the tutelage of Kelvin Kaindu. In the first stanza one would have thought Power was going to be among the top three until midseason when some influential players left the Yellow side of Kitwe.

Their last league title triumph was in 2011. But then Dynamos had players like Felix Nyaende who scored 9 goals during that season, other notable stars were Luka Lungu (16), Lottie Phiri (11) , Mukuka Mulenga, Joseph Sitali.

A team that boosts of not having been relegated since 1971, in fact it is the only team that has never been relegated. With this in mind this is a team that most people expect to be ruthless and start working towards challenging for honors especially the league title.

This will be Kaindu’s second season in charge, as per expectation it’s expected that he has understood the trend and style of the Super League and he will be going for the title this year.

Upfront it’s important that strikers will be more confident and find the back of the net in order to be consistent and pick maximum points. The likes of Alex Ngo’nga, Larry Bwalya, Godfrey Ngwenya, and Benson Sakala will be needed to inspire the team.

This is time to prove that they can also match the recent exploits of their neighbors Nkana as their longtime nemesis will be touring the continent in CAF interclub competition. As the only team with a continental trophy, In 1991, Power Dynamos became the first southern African club to win a continental trophy after they won the African Cup Winners’ Cup. Power 90 needs to rise and shine.

One hopes that the four-teams tournament has provided vital lessons for the technical bench at Power before the start of the season.
Power Dynamos is a giant and Arthur Davies deserves a trophy this season!!
