Chipolopolo goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene says he knew where Riyad Mahrez would place his spot kick as he had studied his weaknesses.
Mweene who saved a penalty from Algeria’s star player Mahrez in the World Cup qualifier in Algeria which ended 1 – 0 in favour of Zambia said he had taken time to study Mahrez ahead of the game.
“As a goalkeeper when you are going to play with a player like that you want to see their weaknesses as well,” the Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper told Zambianfootball.co.zm
“I guessed right, I knew he was going that side that’s why I went full out in that direction,” he added.
Mweene dived to his left and put out a powerful spot kick from the Leicester City attacker after Fackson Kapumbu had conceded a penalty in the 15th minute.
The 32 year old who captained the side on the day was in fine form with his heroics helping Zambia pick up maximum points which see them move into second position three points behind leaders Nigeria.
Mahrez was the latest on his list of prominent players who have failed to convert against the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winner who include Asamoah Gyan, Didier Drogba, Gervinho and Kolo Toure.

Mweene. One of the best goalstoppers of all.
Keep going we need you.
Time. AFCON winner as well. Cant agree more.
You did a great job Kennedy! You were the man of the match! You surely saved the team and us!
I thought the time for heroic acts has passed for him but you’ve proved me wrong.
You can say that again.
Congratulations Kennedy – u are a product of hard work and intelligence.
Please what is the mathematical chance of Zambia’s qualifications? All I see is. a draw for Nigeria against Zambia and Zambia failing to beat Cameroon 5-6nil may hand the worldcup ticket to Nigeria due to Zambia’s lesser goal aggregate.Do you see Nigeria not picking at least a point in her remaining 2 games?
This is the time to call Chali Musonda?????????????
He was made in Kitwe! Football is made in Kitwe in Zambia! Keekkeeke
Mweene also saved Nigerian, Mikel Obi’s penalty, what a goalkeeper!
Mweene should remain captain but personally I feel that Rainford Kalaba should be in the squad to play in October. Ba lamutina sana ama nai… Zamfoot please set up a pole so we can vote . Ine am down that he should be included.
Next time Ba Mweene use both hands when punching! It helps for best control! That one ricocheted and could have been bad! Overall, however, excellent!
well done Captain Mweene. You did a great job!
GOOD JOB MWEENE
