Congolese hitman Chrispin ‘The Assassin’ Mugalu is on course to break the scoring records if he continues to enjoy his rich vein of form.
His hatrick over the weekend in Lusaka Dynamos’ 5-2 defeat of struggling City of Lusaka took his tally to 20 goals becoming only the sixth player to go home with match ball this season.
Two other Congolese; Zanaco’s Herieter Nkonko and Walter Bwalya of Nkana have hit hatricks. The others are Green Eagles’ Tapson Kaseba and Forest Rangers playmaker Logic Ching’andu as well as Kalampa’s Shadreck Musonda who grabbed his in September against relagation bound Real Nakonde.
Whiile Mugalu has been scoring for fun, Zambia coach Wedson Nyirenda is still searching for his top-man ahead of next year’s CHAN tournament in Morocco.
With Kenyan striker Jesse Were on 14 goals, the highest scoring Zambian in the league is Green Buffaloes’ Friday Samu followed by Forest Rangers’ Kobe Chipeta with 9 goals.
Fwayo Tembo has just grabbed a goal for Lusaka Dynamos to add to the seven goals he scored at Power Dynamos in the first half of the season.
Chitiya Mususu of Napsa Stars, Power Dynamos’ Alex Ng’onga and Green Eagles duo Mwila Kabwe and Kaseba all have seven goals.
In the last decade, there has just been three strikers to have hit the 20 goal mark in the MTN Super League and coincidentally, the trio all hail from across the Kasumba Lesa border post.
In 2009, the diminutive Patrick Kabamba grabbed 20 goals in 20 appearances for Zanaco as he led them to the title. Had it not been for an injury, Kabamba could have increased his tally.

Five games into this season, comparisons started between Mugalu and last season’s golden boot winger Walter Bwalya – Binene Sabwa.
Had it not been for saga which saw the Kalampa hitman miss two thirds of the season, it could have been interesting to see how the two strikers compared at the end of the season.

With five round of matches in the league to go, is it a matter of when for Mugalu to break Walter’s record?
The Kalampa striker hit an astonishing 24 goals last season as he claimed a hatrick of awards at the Nkana awards gala while Ziyo Tembo denied him the chance to emulate Kabamba’s feat in 2009.
Having joined the elite duo Walter Bwalya and Kabamba, 5 more goals for Mugalu will be enough to make him a record scorer.

Just look at at how calm but leather Mugalu comes out when faced with a goal mouth – simply brilliant with his finishing. I very rare occasions have i seen him miss when he is in attack. Some players come to mind when i think of precision when face to face with a goal keeper – Kalusha, Lota, Mbesuma and recently Kalengo would RARY miss infant of goal. Their posibilites in scoring would be around 90%. I would rate Mugalu in the same category. N’gonga falls in the same class as Festus Mbewe naba Milanzi. More of failing than scoring. Its a pity.
