Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Collins Mbesuma scored and assisted a goal to help Gauteng side Maccabi FC into the National First Division next season.
‘Ntofontofo’ has gone from being relegated to the second division with one club to helping another earn promotion from South Africa’s third tier.
The 34-year-old joined the ABC Motsepe League outfit just three months ago, after being clubless since leaving Highlands Park at the end of last season.
His experience has proven pivotal to Maccabi’s achievement as they went from winning the Gauteng stream to navigating their way through the play-offs to reach the final – subsequently earning automatic promotion.
The ex-Chipolopolo man came off the bench to score his side’s second goal and assisted the third in a 3-1 win over Limpopo’s The Dolphins FC in their play-off semi-final on Thursday afternoon.
Maccabi are now in the running for the R1-million prize money, and await the outcome of the second semi-final between Free State’s Mangaung Unite and Mpumalanga’s TS Sporting this afternoon.

Congrats to the big man Mbesuma! This fellow loves to play football, pure and simple. Any of us would be lucky to have a job we enjoy as much as he enjoys his. Chipolopolo!

The Egyptian goalie is to play at the world at age 40, he will be the oldest player at this year tournament. If the lad still has the energy to go on an extra mile, just encourage him. He loves the football in him.
Its his choice and if he is still contributing he can even go on forever.
Even within the Chipolopolo set up if he can compete at that level.
There is no age limit.
Roger Mila was 41 when he played for Cameroun at his last World Cup, he even scored against Colombia and ran to dance by the corner flag. Unfortunately we hear the Columbian Goal keeper was later shot for that.
Mbesuma is still 7 years younger than this.
That is the statement bro! Well said.
The Columbian goalkeeper René Higuita is still alive. Google him and see his scorpion save at Wembly Vs England
Sir Stanley Mathews played in his early 50s.Let Mbesuma be encouraged to continue doing what he knows best, scoring goals.Africans have have a tendency to cheer European players who are 30 something years old but they call their players in the same age range to quit playing football. Is this being myopic or the infamous pull him down mentality?
Let him continue playing. He is an inspiration to a lot of players in this part of Africa. His two boys are learning a lot from him as they chat their football careers.
It will take us a long time to see a man as calm as he was pa Goal. What a football brain this lad has. I will always be in awe of him as a player!!
