Makeni Face Cage Test as Title and Relegation Battles Intensify in Week 24

The race for promotion and the fight for survival take centre stage this weekend as the ZPL National League enters a decisive Matchweek 24.

Leaders Makeni All Stars sit top on 48 points after 23 matches and will be desperate to maintain their advantage when they travel to Ndola to face ninth-placed Indeni FC at the intimidating Indeni Sports Complex — famously known as “The Cage.”

But while Makeni look to tighten their grip at the summit, the chasing pack and those scrapping at the bottom have plenty at stake.

🔥 Match of the Weekend: Indeni vs Makeni All Stars

All eyes will be on Ndola on Saturday afternoon.

Makeni have been the most consistent side in the division — 14 wins, six draws and just three defeats — and boast the league’s best goal difference (+20). However, their 3-0 win over Indeni in the reverse fixture will count for little in what promises to be a hostile away test.

Indeni may be ninth with 28 points, but they remain one of the league’s draw specialists and have shown resilience at home. They will look to striker Jonathan Munalula, who has nine goals this season, to test a Makeni backline that has conceded just 15 goals — the second-best defensive record in the division.

Makeni’s attacking hopes will rest on the shoulders of Mike Musukuma (8 goals), whose movement and finishing have been key to their title charge.

With second-placed Chirundu United breathing down their necks on 44 points, Makeni cannot afford any slip-ups.

🥊 The Top Four Scrap

Just four points separate second from fifth, setting up a fascinating weekend in the promotion race.

Chirundu United host struggling Kitwe United in Lusaka knowing victory would pile pressure on Makeni. Chirundu have been strong at home and are coming off renewed confidence following their recent win over Mpulungu Harbour.

Third-placed Roan United FC (43 points) face a tricky away assignment against Lumwana Radiants, who sit seventh and remain mathematically in the promotion conversation.

Fourth-placed Forest Rangers FC (41 points) travel to Luanshya to take on relegation-threatened Jumulo FC. With league-leading scorer Nicholas Chipoya (10 goals) spearheading their attack, Forest will be confident of collecting maximum points.

Meanwhile, fifth-placed Trident FC (41 points) meet second-from-bottom River Plate in Lusaka. Trident thrashed River Plate 4-1 in the reverse fixture and will see this as another opportunity to keep pace with the top three.

⚠️ Relegation Battle Heats Up

At the foot of the table, the tension is equally intense.

River Plate (17th, 18 points) desperately need a result against Trident to avoid being cut adrift. Jumulo (15th, 21 points) also face a stern test against high-flying Forest Rangers.

Sixteenth-placed Kitwe United (21 points) travel to Chirundu, while bottom club Mpulungu Harbour remain on 17 points amid off-field uncertainty.

Elsewhere, Ndola United take on Aguila Stars, with Aguila aiming to strengthen their top-eight ambitions. On Sunday, Chipata City Council FC host Kafue Celtic, while Locus FC battle Atletico Lusaka in another fixture with survival implications.

A Defining Weekend

With promotion hopes, top-four ambitions, and relegation fears colliding, Week 24 could prove pivotal in shaping the final stretch of the season.

For Makeni All Stars, it’s about defending their crown position.

For the chasing pack, it’s about closing the gap.

And for those at the bottom, it’s about survival.

Saturday at 15:00 may just redefine the National League narrative.
