Lwandamina defends playing Kalengo and substituting Sabamukama

Zesco United coach George Lwandamina defended his decision to replace enterprising midfielder Enock Sabamukama with Maybin Kalengo in the second half of his teams 1-1 draw with TP Mazembe.

Lwandamina who clearly stated that he was not a fan of discussing players said the Burundian midfielder was losing the ball too often in the middle of the park. He also explained that Kalengo played very well when he came on in Lubumbashi in the first leg and was hoping for more of the same.

“Maybin Kalengo has been playing very well and he is young with a lot of potential. I can introduce him in any game, We started Kalaba at a very young age. As a coach you have to take risks. We take risks in football like in any other business. If you see potential in someone you have to encourage them. You want me start playing him at 41? How fair is that?, ” he said.

” I know people wanted Enock (Sabamukama) to continue playing but all the break down in midfield were from him. Mind you Maybin played very well when I introduced him and I thought he could do the same, Not all days are Sundays,” he added.

Zesco United dropped to the Confederation Cup following a one all draw against Mazembe which meant they were eliminated from the Champions League 2-1 on aggregate. Tresor Mputu equalised three minutes into the second half after star forward Lazarus Kambole had put the home side in the lead in the first half.
