Copper Queens forward Racheal Kundananji scored a brace to help Bay FC secure a historic United States National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) playoff spot in her club’s 3-2 win over Houston Dash at the BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.
Bay FC’s opener came in the 10th minute from Paige Nielsen own goal before Barbara Olivieri levelled ties for Houston in the 14th minute.
Kundananji’s first goal of the game came seven minutes later when she unleashed a fierce shot inside the box that found the back of the net past Houston goalkeeper Heather Hinz.
Houston drew level at the start of the second half when Avery Patterson finished her solo run with a goal past Katelyn Rowland but Kundananji had a similar run when she went past three defenders to score Bay FC’s winner in the 54th minute.
Kundananji’s brace is the first in the history of Bay FC.
This win marks the first time in the club’s history that Bay FC has advanced to the quarterfinal playoffs, and become only the second NWSL club to make the playoffs in their inaugural season.
The expanded eight-team quarterfinal round begins on 8 November as Barbra Banda’s Orlando Pride, who clinched the NWSL Shield, hosts the to-be-determined No. 8 seed at Inter&Co Stadium.
