Irfan Kawri leaves Chipolopolo

Irfan Kawri’s stint as Chipolopolo assistant coach has come to an abrupt end after the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) announced that he has left the Chipolopolo squad which is currently in Rwanda for the CHAN tournament.

FAZ stated that Kawri who was appointed about three weeks ago will return to England in a not informative statement.

“Assistant coach Irfan Kawri has returned to Lusaka from where he will proceed to go back to his England base. Kawri returns for private and family reasons.”

“Coach George Lwandamina and Kawri informed the squad of the private reasons,” the statement from FAZ read.

Kawri was instrumental in preparing the team ahead of the Rwanda CHAN tournament and was the main man in drilling the team especially in getting the players in shape before departure for the Johannesburg training camp.

It is still unclear what type contract Kawri was on though it was widely believed that he was being primed to take over the Chipolopolo top job.

With Fighton Simukonda axed from the national team after the dismal performance of the Olympic team at the U23 AFCON finals, coach George Lwandamina only remains with Chintu Kampamba as his first assistant while Mike Poto is the goalkeeper coach.

Zambia play the first game at the tournament on Tuesday against Zimbabwe.
