Kansanshi Dynamos will head into their Week 21 MTN Super League fixture against Mutondo Stars with a number of key absences, as injuries and illness disrupt preparations ahead of Saturday’s encounter at Independence Stadium.
The Mabanga Boys are set to be without four starters, while defensive midfielder Kelvin Kapumbu remains a major doubt as he continues to manage a hamstring concern.
Assistant coach Dennis Makinka, however, has downplayed fears over the growing injury list, expressing confidence in the squad’s depth ahead of the crucial league tie.
“We have a few injuries, but we have a big squad with players ready to step in. Everyone trains the same things, so it becomes easier for someone else to come in and contribute.”
The technical bench will definitely be without defender Rodgers Lukonde, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Mathews Mutombo is ruled out after being diagnosed with malaria.
On the flanks, Willy Bokingo is unavailable due to a right knee sprain, with Patrick Macheso also nursing a knee sprain that will keep him out of this weekend’s fixture. Meanwhile, Kapumbu’s availability will be determined by a late fitness test.
Team medic Niza Simukulwa provided an encouraging update on the injured quartet, confirming that progress has been steady.
“Kapumbu is making good progress and we are monitoring whether he will play or not. Rodgers and Willy started their physiotherapy yesterday and are likely to miss two games. Patrick is recovering well and is likely to be back next week, while Mathews is also expected to return from malaria next week.”
Despite the setbacks, Makinka believes the situation presents an opportunity for emerging talent within the squad to stake their claim.
“It’s a great opportunity for those who have been waiting for their chance. The players are motivated, and training has been positive.”
With valuable points at stake in the Week 21 showdown, Kansanshi Dynamos will be banking on squad depth and collective resilience as they aim to secure a positive result against Mutondo Stars.
