On Sunday evening, sixth-placed Śląsk Wrocław welcomed log leaders, Legia Warszawa in a match-day 20 of the PKO Ekstraklasa.
Warszawa headed into the game as clear favorites, having lost only one of their last 5 games. Śląsk on the other hand has struggled for form since the restart having picked up only a single win in their last five games.
Chipolopolo wing-wizard, Lubambo Musonda, who campaigns for Śląsk was handed a starting berth on the right-wing. The Chipolopolo attacker put in an energetic ninety-minute shift.
As early as the 3rd minute, Śląsk had a chance to take the lead when a ball played through to the penalty area from the right found Musonda, but the resulting shot did not trouble Boruc in goal.
Musonda continued to assert himself on the game by linking up well with Robert Pich and causing problems for Legia.
In the 17th minute, Exposito won a duel in the air and fed the ball to Musonda on the right side. Musonda played a delightful cross towards Pich, whose header was well saved by Boruc.
As the game went on, Legia started to get into the game.
With the game still locked at 0 – 0, in the 27th minute, Musonda intervened at the last minute to take the ball away from Gvilia, who was lining up a shot towards goal.
In the 33rd minute, another dangerous ball was floated from the right side towards Śląsk’s penalty area by Legia. However, Śląsk’s defenders were well-positioned to intervene.
Before halftime, the ‘WKS’, as Śląsk are popularly known had a chance to break the deadlock. A free-kick was awarded outside Legia’s penalty area. The resulting shot from Pawłowski was blasted over the bar. 0-0 the game went into halftime.
At the restart, both teams were guilty of lapses with several misplaced passes and tackles. A player from each side was handed a yellow card caution in separate incidences.
Śląsk were lucky to not fall behind when a cross from a corner kick hit the post in the 58th minute. That incidence would seem like a wake-up call, as Śląsk came alive to have their best chances of the game in quick succession. First, Pawłowski’s first time shot narrowly missed the goal.
A minute later, Pich was guilty of wasting another opportunity when his shot from a sharp angle was pushed for a corner by Legia’s goalkeeper at his near post. From the resulting corner, Tamas’s glaring header hit the side net to deny Śląsk the opening goal.
In the 64th minute, Śląsk were made to pay for their missed chances. Following some quick action on the right side, Pawel Wszołek charged into the penalty area with the ball before placing it past Śląsk’s goalie to hand Legia the lead.
In reaction, Śląsk attacked relentlessly with Musonda leading the charge for an equalizer. However, the visitors managed the game well to keep the hosts at bay. Legia held on for a narrow win and extended their lead at the top of the league to 42 points. Śląsk drops to 7th position on 28 points and is 7 points behind the last available Europe League Qualification spot.
Lubambo Musonda is one of the players that have been summoned in Chipolopolo coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojević’s 33-man provisional squad.
