Justice Kafusha on Godfrey Chitalu –

Ucar Godfrey Chitalu, the man who possessed a thunderbolt of a shot from both feet and a speed that left defenders and goalkeepers allover Africa, shadows and shivering. Zambias most feared goal king. This was the game vs Morocco away in the 1980 World cup qualifier. That is the admiral jersey, that was donated by a British company under Brian Tiler. The other set was all white and some green.

He was very short tempered and used to fight if provoked. I remember the game vs Algeria at Independence stadium, an Algerian defender spat on him, Ba Ucar chased the guy allover the stadium wanting to beat him up. It took the intervention of the police and senior players to restrain him.

All those that knew ba Ucar, know what I am talking about. Bale tina even players on his side were afriad to make silly mistakes, pantu ba Ucar kukusoka, period

  1. “107 Ucar” Godfrey Chitalu. For those who were not born 107 refers to the goals he scored in one season while Ucar refers to a well-known brand of batteries in the 1970s which were long-lasting and we used to own ITT Supersonic or two or three band radios which were powered by these batteries at the time.

  2. Its been said that he was short tempered and indisciplined at times, had a very powerful shot like Melu, unfortunately he perished in the Gabon air disaster MHSRIP.

    • He was very short tempered and used to fight if provoked. I remember the game vs Algeria at Independence stadium, an Algerian defender spat on him, Ba Ucar chased the guy allover the stadium wanting to beat him up. It took the intervention of the police and senior players to restrain him

      • Kekekeke But iwe Justice sometimes uli wama jokes. I old were you to remember such a scene of Chitalu chasing around a fellow player?
What a bad way of remembering a player. I didn’t know he was such tempered.

          • I am serious, ba Ucar bale ba tina, shi Mwamba ala ni umfwa fye. The man had courage that I have never ever seen in any Zambian player

When Kabwe Warriors were stoned by fans in Madagascar (then Malagasy), it was because ba late Ucar, was being kicked and tackled crudely by the home team players, at the end he became annoyed and retaliated after a crude challenge and hell broke loose, with the fans stoning the Kabwe Warriors players. Warriors had won the first game and were leading in Malagasy. I have a lot of history of Zambian football, such that if I were to share that on a public media, it could take me a lot of time to complete cause I am not talking about pages here

            Cheers

        • In 1980 I was 16 and going to School at Chingola Secondary school. I watched ba Ucar sometimes and no one can tell me anything about him.

Ucar went after the Algerian player. All those that knew ba Ucar, know what I am talking about. Bale tina even players on his side were afriad to make silly mistakes, pantu ba Ucar kukusoka, period

PS: I started following Zambian football from the early 70´s thru ka Radio

    • Every picture tells a story and for this one even more than a proof-there’s even a picture of him being awarded a ball inscribed 107 by Rothmans Pall Mall!

  3. Ucar Godfrey Chitalu (The man who possessed a thunderbolt of a shot and speed that left many defenders and goalkeepers allover Africa shadows and shivering). Zambias most feared Goal king. The game is Morocco Vs Zambia 1980 World cup qualifiers

    • Adidas, all copper that they wore in the olympics 1988 and following, Zambia must have had one of the best quality jerseys in Africa then. The Liverpool style one in 94 was not good.

      Of course 2012 is special.

  5. the useless outgoing fifa president refused to recognised 107 goals scored in one season by the late and the great godfrey chitalu.

  6. @Mwebantu You remind me of the famous brand back then – ITT. We used to watch ‘The Flintstones’ on the ITT Supersonic TV set displaying black and white pictures. In the late 70s, ITT Superstars of Livingstone was on the lips of many soccer lovers not only in Maramba but stretching from Libuyu to Kashitu compound.

  7. I remember watching Kabwe Warriors playing against Livingstone Select team at Maramba Stadium in the late 70s and it was my first time to see the legendary ‘UCAR’ Godfrey Chitalu. He was a marvel to watch, doning the number 10 jersey. His skills were out of this worls and spectators all over, chanted UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCAR, ELELELELELELELELE, UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCAR, ELELELELELELELELE. . . . Livingstone Select team was white washed eleven goals to zero.

    • Boyi bati twa letambo bola yena those days. Those were days that one remembers until the last breath of fresh air

I watched ba Ucar first time when was 9 years in 1973, when Zambia beat Madagascar 3-1, in the 1974AFCON qualifiers, in Lusaka. It was at this game we got tu ma paper caps distributed by Ucar battery. I will never forget. Ucar was Ucar, no fear whether playing away or at home

The climax of the drama was when Mufulira Wanderers played Kabwe Warriors, this game was about the 3 Nkole brothers vs Ucar. Yali ni game ya baume. Iyo kwena

  8. As a youngster in Buchi,in Kitwe he was doing both boxing and Football. He went on to excel in Football. At one time in 1980, he slapped Willie Phiri after ba Willie dribbled him badly and Warriors lost that Game 4-0.
Later on a a coach he beat up a Ref by the name of Kabalamula Chayu and was banned from football. It took Ba Eliya Mwanza (Warriors Chairman) and Eliya Mwanza (FAZ Life member together with our very own RB, another FAZ life member) to get him pardoned.
Infact in the 60s (it is rumoured) he broke one ka British player’s ribs, when one British Team came touring Zambia for trials with the intentions of signing him on as a pro. But that is another story, since I didn’t watch this game.
I remember listening to my old man’s ITT Supersonic Green 2 Band Radio how bawishi Ponga shouted after Chitalu equalized 1-1. Chitalu 1-1; Chitalu 1-1; Chitalu 1-1, at the in 1974 EGYPT AFCON. It was a slogan we almost grew up imitating.
Liwewe almost went ballistic after Brighton Sinyangwe equalised 2-2 with 30 seconds to go, to send the 1974 Afcon final into another game 2 days later, there were no penalties, then so the 1974 Afcon was played over two games in 2 days. We finally lost 2-0 to the Zaire Leopards.
UCAR left ahis own legacy on Zambian football.

    • All you are very right, he slapped ba Willie and Rangers players among them Anthony “ma vole pracedo” Bwali surrounded ucar threatning to beat him up, but no one dare touch him

    • Always fighting all of them, but he always clobbered them

The guys were after him all the time. The Nkole brothers planned all this all week before the game vs Warriors. Kwali ati Chitalu aleisa akesa mona. Yali ni nkondo

      • looks like it was more than football. So how could you mark him if there was always a threat in his stare?
How could you dribble him when “if you succeed” you may be clobbered by the footballer-cum- boxer?

  9. @ Paradox, thanks. @ Vinkubala, yes I remember ITT Superstars of Livingstone. It is great that these days we can have a team from Kafue or Choma play in competitive league. Those days those teams could not make it to the premier league because the competition was stiff for any of them to make it!

  10. And he used to serve a number of suspensions for that but he was a “bad boy” on the pitch. The kind you would want to be on your side. Listen to the radio commentary by Dennis Liwewe on Zambia vs Uganda and you get a feel of what we had! It is on Youtube.

  11. Uncle Bobs, you are right. Rothmans Pall Mall and Castle Lager had vigorously promoted football in Zambia at the time. Rothmans Trophy and Castle Cup were coveted trophies to hold and were very competitive tournaments! Wow, time flies!

  12. Not only was Ucar short tempered he also had a kind of sense of humour on the field of play. During a league match at Buchi Stadium, Ucar fouled another player. The ref Arther Davis promptly flashed the yellow card at Ucar! To everyones suprprise this was followed by red card. After the match the ref pointed out that “I asked him for his name and the chap answered Martin Peters”! Am not gonna allow players make a fool of me, so I sent him off”!!

  13. Zambia would have won 6 afcon trophies if they had possibly 4 players of Ucar’s calibre in those acient times. Football rules have now changed in morden world. Yes Ucar had a great football talent, but 4 his short temper and deeds on the pitch must have been originated from Asante Kotoko where he played professional football in 1971 just 4 about 6 months. By that time, I was 52 years old.

  15. Thank you all for sharing these wonderful memories on this great son of Zambia.
    Justice, good job.
We have compiled the rest of the stories you have shared on Ucar for another throwback on him.

  16. Moffat mutambo sinkala, he is the father to andrew and nathan sinkala. It is a family of footballers. Even his young brothers played for nchanga rangers hardwell (late) and frank

  18. There was also a persistent rumor in Kabwe that the revered Ucar smoked marijuana; maybe that’s why he was so hot-tempered at times! He played like a real warrior (After all he came from Warriors) and he didn’t take to kindly to team mates who held the ball unnecessarily when he was in a good position to release one of his trademark thunderbolts…..Alex Chola learned very quickly when he joined the KK XI and made sure his mdala didn’t get upset!

  19. Zamfoot be careful when compiling the version of some of the stories about goal maestro Ucar as some of them, like the smoking of marihuana, etc are not authentic. Ucar was temperamental but some of the actions allegedly committed by him are exaggeration s . If someone talked about Kapambwe Mulenga smoking marihuana, I would not argue with such a person.
The black and copper jersey was a no nonsense colour which was only won on serious business and only players ready to die a little for Mother Zambia wore it.
