George Lwandamina: We did our best!

Chipolopolo coach George Lwandamina says his team did the best it could but was undone by the failure to put away chances.

Lwandamina said this after he saw his side lose 5 – 4 on penalties after playing to a 0 – 0draw against Guinea to bow out of the 2016 CHAN tournament.

“We played the way we wanted to play and planned. I knew Guinea has very fast players, but my defenders were firm and watertight.”

“We played with two strikers and our intention was to finish the game in regulation time,” he said.

“Being the only team which never conceded a goal. We created some chances but failed to score.”

“We did our best but we did not put away our chances,” he added.

Zambia bowed out of the tournament without conceding a goal in open play.

  1. An investigation should be carried out to ascertain as to why we seemed only to have players from Zesco United and Green Buffaloes!

  2. Kay Hammer. Fire him how? He is sitting there as an interim coach with no contract. You cant fire him until you hire him.

      • Iwe na Iwe Kay, chi Kalusha Walya is the main problem, until kalusha Walya is out of Faz, brace yourselves for more mediocre performances like these. Kalu has been making phone calls trying to sale some of the players that represented Zambia at the Chan, but sources tells me that there is a deadlock as Kalu is demanding a 35% cut for every transaction.

        • I have been talking about the FAZ DICTATOR Kalusha Bwalya for years here. He is a cancer to our football. The has taken our football to the DOGS and it’s high time he leaves!!!!

  3. I can understand vans Mr Lwandamina’s game plan. But it is still frustrating to see the team fail to put passes together especially the midfielders. I am satisfied with what he is trying to do. But I think the Zambian league lacks quality.

  4. I can understand vans Mr Lwandamina’s game plan. But it is still frustrating to see the team fail to put passes together especially the midfielders. I am satisfied with what he is trying to do. But I think the Zambian league lacks quality. This lack of ability particularly in midfield
    is what is killing us.

  5. sack him in which way.when was the last time Zambia went past group stage?make a mistake in sacking him and your situation will go frm bad to worse.he is simply the best after renard.he has been able to go past group stages and most importantly, was able to secure qualification to the next round of world cup qualifiers after convincingly beating Sudan home and away.

    • George is the best coach we have in the nation so far.Let us not be cheated bwana, but we should accept that our league isn`t good enough in terms of quality.

  6. Shut up: chicken was not a player and each player was a possible player Zambia could select. Each player was responsible to defend and /or score. Then they failed, chicken gave instructions over mature and best players but they failed on the last game. Those who criticize chicken apply to be a national team coach to see what miracle you will produce, otherwise I would say we have better players but lacking scoring prowess-such as Jack chanda, late “Ucar” Godfrey,Bernard Chanda, these three players were dangerous in the 18 areas ,they were not entering the 18 twice without a goal.

    • We can’t be dwelling on past great players like Ucar or Chanda. That’s why we need a coach who get the best out of our current crop of players. Even if we had scored 3 or more goals against Guinea would you’ve been happy with how Zambia was playing? No build up play, couldn’t put a string of passes together, gave opponents too much time and space on the ball. The team was set up not to attack. That’s why you saw Chris drifting out wide most of the time instead of being in the box. There was no service coming from the midfield or from our dormant fullbacks.

  7. If you call that your best then your team leaves much to be desired. Sorry Ba coach, on my ranking sheet, you and Mr Janza are at the same level, the only difference isn you’re currently receiving two salaries, while he recieves one. Anyway, hard luck with “your best”.

  8. Those midfielders ninshi bola bateya kuma clubs yamuti? So if katongo, Chansa and JB had been left out at selection stage, what could have happened to that team in Rwanda?

  9. George is head and shoulders above any other coach in Zambia. Sacking him should not be an option if you have any sort of brains. The only way to improve our game is investing in local football. Even changing FAZ admin is not an answer. Am not a fan of Kalu, infact am still haunted by that trip to London against Ghana when our preps were so poor we have to field students in a proper international and lost 4-0 as a result of his poor admin. The only problem i have with Kamanga or any other contenders is, what have they done at club level to warrant taking over from Kalu? if you have an imposing club level CV. You have harnessed a club that is a giant at club level like katumbi (TP Mazembe) or Irvin Khoza (Orlando Pirates) then taking over at National Association level would be well warranted. If you do not have this ambition at club level then do not contest. Some will argue Kalu did not have club pedigree before taking over at FAZ and i will agree however my view is why should we keep making the same mistake. Every candidate should be learning on the job at our expense? we definitely wont succeed with that thinking. Leave Kalu and Lwandamina in their positions until you can recruit people who are head and shoulders above their level to take over.

    • @Ngake I agree with everything except on Lwandamina. I believe that your wise suggestions to invest in local football is a long term plan that can benefit Zambia. But we also have immediate needs. The position of the national coach cannot wait for long term plans to be implemented. If we contend that Lwandamina is the best in the country (I don’t even know what criteria is used to reach this verdict) and yet Zambia is playing football like primary school kids then we might as well withdraw from upcoming tournaments instead of embarrassing ourselves.

      • if George is not the best Zambian born coach at present then please put forward another name. Criteria i used – small matter of back to back club league titles where the Zesco team has been way above the level of other clubs. An under-20 world cup qualification and last 16 qualification once at the world cup with a team boasting players we still depend on now. Dont get me wrong i all for other options but they have to be better. A few years ago i would have selected Masauso Mwale and Keagan Mumba as probable candidates however both are now late (let them RIP). if not george in my opinion the only option is a foreign coach however we seem incapable of paying for one. Therefore what are the feasible options – George or any other Zambian coach. i will rather have George thankyou.

  10. Don’t linganya a Chicken to a Fox.A Fox brought us a trophy ,while a Chicken has failed at a small tournament called Chan.A fox used to cast his net wide ,while a Chicken is a pretender.

  11. The problem is that not enough football is played in zambia.e.g.not enough cup tournaments currently we only have the Backlays cup.

  12. …and to be honest i am a bit surprised that zambia reached the QF stage after the departure of Kalengo i predicted that zambia wud draw all the matches (0-0 or 1-1 score lines)due to wat i saw as a strong defence an average mid-field and very weak strike force .All in all its better to take the positives rather than the negatives going forward.

  13. Our people have very low goals set! I do not know which coach can take our team further. Maybe we try Ba Fortson Kabole! All these guys have no vision!

  14. George is the best? Fortunately guys you mentioned that amongst what we have (the best or the worst!) And it is bad. If you cannot reach semi final with low quality players in opposition what will happen when you face better players?
