FC Leopards relegated despite final-day win as ZESCO hit ZANACO for six

FC Leopards were relegated from the MTN Super League on the final day of the season despite beating Nkwazi FC 1-0, while ZESCO United produced a stunning performance to thrash ZANACO FC 6-1 in Ndola.

At the other end of the table, NAPSA Stars secured survival with a narrow victory over Mutondo Stars, while FC MUZA sealed a third-place finish after overcoming Kabwe Warriors.

In Kabwe, FC Leopards did all they could to avoid the drop as Joshua Mapande struck in the 40th minute to hand the “Correct Boys” a 1-0 victory over Nkwazi.

But celebrations were cut short after news filtered through that NAPSA Stars had also won their match in Lusaka, condemning Leopards to relegation alongside Mines United. Leopards finished the campaign on 34 points, one behind NAPSA.

At Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, ZESCO United ended an inconsistent season in emphatic fashion with a ruthless demolition of ZANACO.

Leonard Mulenga opened the scoring in the 20th minute before Derrick Obame doubled the lead on 31 minutes. Elvis Addae made it 3-0 just three minutes later as ZESCO tore through the visitors’ defence in a devastating first-half spell.

ZANACO briefly responded through Dominic Kanda in the 38th minute to reduce the deficit to 3-1, but there was no way back for the Bankers.

Abraham Siankombo restored ZESCO’s four-goal cushion in the 58th minute before late strikes from Amine Hiver in the 90th minute and Anthony Chiyuka in stoppage time completed the rout.

The victory saw ZESCO finish the season in 10th place on 47 points, while ZANACO ended seventh on 50 points after missing the chance to secure a top-three finish.

In Lusaka, NAPSA Stars preserved their top-flight status thanks to a tense 1-0 victory over Mutondo Stars.

Matthews Tolopa proved the hero for the Pensioners when he struck in the 68th minute, lifting NAPSA to 35 points and ensuring survival on the final day.

Meanwhile, FC MUZA capped off an impressive campaign with a 2-1 victory over Kabwe Warriors to clinch third place.

Given Kalusa converted from the penalty spot in the 28th minute before adding his second on the stroke of half-time to put MUZA firmly in control.

Tryson Banda pulled one back for Kabwe Warriors in the 72nd minute, but MUZA held on to secure all three points and finish third on 51 points, ahead of fourth-placed Kabwe Warriors on goal difference.
