FAZ appoints Hasselbank’s former backroom staff member as Chipolopolo coach

The Football Association of Zambia, FAZ is set to appoint Irfan Kawri as Chipolopolo coach, Zambianfootball.co.zm can exclusively reveal.

And George Lwandamina will continue as HEAD TRAINER with both men set to plot Zambia’s passage at the CHAN 2016 tournament in Rwanda which starts on January 16.

Kawri and Lwandamina will be tasked to deliver the CHAN trophy on February 9 by the Football House hierarchy in Lusaka or atleast a semi final place.

According to the ZamFoot Crew sources in England, Kawri, who has an Asian Father and a Zambian Mother [has a British passport] will be part of the Chipolopolo technical bench for the CHAN tournament.

“Mr Kawri is coming as a coach while Mr Lwandamina will be the head trainer. He is a good coach,” a source told the ZamFoot Crew.

“He won’t be new to Zambian football actually. He was part of the junior Chipolopolo teams when Patrick Phiri was in charge around 2000,” the source added.

The 34 year old has worked his way from non-league to league football in England.

Having failed to make a cut as a proffesional footballer, Kawri earned a Sports Science degree before attaining his football coaching badges.

He has coached in the lower tiers of English football but his breakthrough was at Wigan Athletic where he worked as an opposition scout.

In addition he has a UEFA B and UEFA A licence preparatory course [hasn’t yet completed UEFA A] as well as a member of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s backroom staff at Burton Albion, a league one English side before the Dutch man and former Chelsea striker took over at Championship side QPR early this month.

He also combined roles of youth team coach and opposition scout analyst.

Kawri has been handed the Chipolopolo job and its up to him to deliver CHAN trophy. In short, it is his job to lose.

Win CHAN or get to last four, then he will be in-charge of  Zambia’s African and World Cup qualifiers.

In 2008, FAZ President Kalusha Bwalya head hunted for then little known Frenchman Herve Renard and while critics were sceptical about the former Ghana assistant coach and physical trainer’s lack of experience at the top level, the outspoken Frenchman delivered the African Cup of Nations not only with Zambia but also with Ivory Coast.

  1. Is he the head coach or assistant…How can you blame him of he doesn’t win Chan notwithstanding that he isn’t the one that selected the players….

  2. Ma Rubbish ya Kalu, he is scrambling for success huh? For the sake of this young coach, I wish him success in whatever hand picking process this failed FAZ has used to hire him. Yay we have a foreign coach now, come govt give king Kalu money. Useless corrupt moron with their secretive dealings. No transparency at all.

    • This guy is not a coach, he is a player scout..understand the difference? Someone that goes to scout for talent for particular teams not someone that reads games and makes adjustments to win games or trains players. Kalu thinks he is going to make another Renard? Ghana looks genius for hiring Avram Grant, oh wait, they didn’t win the AFCON 2015, never mind.

  3. Hmmm, i prefer to keep Lwandamina but let us see what he can produce. Competition is a good thing!

Even competition for Faz president and Fifa president is healthy.

  4. This is something else, why is it that FAZ like selecting foreign couches in secret? No transparecy at all…….and zamfoot or FAZ can you be precise who will be the head couch Lwandamina or this player scout?
