Expert View : Kalusha was right, no local coach is ripe for Chipolopolo job

The Football Association of Zambia is expected to announce a national team coach to replace Wedson Nyirenda who resigned to take the role of head coach at Baroka in South Africa recently.

According to media reports a number of coaches have shown interest and submitted their CVs to the country’s football governing body FAZ among them Lusaka dynamos’ Dan Kabwe who is the only indigenous coach to do so.

Despite Kabwe being the only one who has applied from the long list of local coaches, There is a possibility of Beston Chambeshi being confirmed especially if he delivers the 2018 COSAFA Castle Cup of which Zambia are through to the final more so that government still seems to being leaning towards not having money to pay for a foreign coach.

Back in 2014 the then FAZ president Kalusha Bwalya came out and said no local coach was ripe for the Chipolopolo top job and it seemed like a dig at local coaches back then and caused quite a stir.

“I don’t think that, it is too simplistic for me to say that, this national team we give it to a Zambian. So it is a big ask for a Zambian and I do not know why we would want a Zambian to be coach because most of the other countries there are all foreigners. 90 per cent of 53 African countries have foreign coaches with the exception of Keshi and Kwesi Appiah the Ghanaian coach,” Kalu told ZNBC TV

“A coach we can find, I think, there are a lot of coaches in Zambia but what is their philosophy? What can they do? What have they done? What have they won at national team level? Can we bring them at national team level?,” He added.

Four years later Kalusha seems to have been vindicated as every local coach that has tried to coach Chipolopolo in the recent past has had an unpleasant ending not to talk of the controversy and failure involved. From Honor Janza to Wedson Nyirenda, The story is the same, A great start with a lot of promise only to suffer a premature and sad ending.

The biggest issue with local coaches seems to be poor team selection and poor tactics or is it the lack of tactics. A coach has the power to call the players he himself feels can deliver for him but the unwritten rule of calling national team players is calling players who have put in good performances for their clubs.

Hence when a coach leaves out the best performing players at Club level and calls players who second choice picks at Club level it raises alot of eyebrows especially if the team goes to a tournament and crumbles like Zambia under Wedson Nyirenda at the Morocco CHAN tournament against Sudan.

Dan Kabwe was appointed Chipolopolo technical director in 2016, What did he bring to the table to point to?, Chambeshi was Nyirenda’s assistant during the four nations tournament where Zambia again crumbled again and to top it off, It’s just barely since his tactical ability was exposed at the 2017 U20 World Cup.

With so much to look back to its clear that now is not the right time to hand the huge responsibility of coaching the Copper Bullets to a local coach.

The only thing standing between a good foreign coach and Chipolopolo is the issue of government not being willing to take on the responsibility of paying the huge sums required but wait a minute their is a businessman at the helm of FAZ in the name of Andrew Kamanga and his campaign was anchored on the fact that he could bring sponsorship to football house, Well now is the time to flex his muscles and get a sponsor to pay a good foreign coach to take Chipolopolo back to where they deserve in football circles.

  1. Even if there is no mula folks, Ama be is not even close to the standard for our national team looks like zamfoot have started to campaign for him,and what’s this thing ati if he wins cosafa then he might land the job winning Malagasy, Namibia is just good for confidence and pedigree not that the team has improved or that the coach is tactically sound

    .

  2. Malawi boasts of just tea, tobacco and chembe fish but have managed to employee a muzungu,us who even boasts of things like black mountain can only or if not thinking of now trying to employee the untactcally sound chambeshi or maybe its because he is one of the oldest coaches locally.

    • Please talk numbers not Muzungu that is being inferior the same Chambeshi you putting down won against Muzungu Coaches at the U20 World Cup. The problem with most Zambians and Some Africans is that they have been brain-washed by the Colour Pink (White), what a shame that is why feasible development evades us. This motto of “KANOFYE UMUSUNGU” must be be given a huge coffin and buried forever!

  3. Lets empower local coaches with potential.Chambeshi deserve the job. He is the first local coach to bring a trophy home.. 2017 zambia under 20 were crowned champions. Who was in charge.. At this current on going tournament he is doing. Even if the boys doesnot bring trophy home. He is only local coach who identify and groom. Look at shemmy mahembe. He is a marvel to watch. I liked the decision made by the technical crew to exposed local talent. We now have a foundation. The boys still have age on their side. The newly assembled chipolopolo side will conquer africa if the needed resources are injected into this project..if we compare the team which was being groomed by janza and wada got rotten before the mission is accomplished. Mufune, mutonga, kalengo, martin phiri, mbesuma, chilufiya and ziyo tembo.. Chambeshi had no saying during the days of wada wada. He brought back chama and the number one center back in zambia billy mutale. Its to late to bring a foreign coach . Chambeshi should be given a simple task to take chipolopolo to the afcon 2019. Then after the tournament consider to bring a foreign coach.

  4. I would prefer Beston to Nyirenda. If Beston has the right pairs of feet he will deliver. He has done it before.

  5. All we need is a coach who is able to pick players on merit , if local we go for local , if foreign we go for foreign .someone who can push ba faz to travel and observe how players locally and outside are performing .not to pick players based on what he’s being informed .going to China , Europe and locally .

  6. Local is laka I’m in full support with those that are supporting chambeshi he knows how to identify and groom talent we had issues of kit but look how the locally made copper Jersey one wouldn’t tell that it is locally made.
This motto of “KANOFYE UMUSUNGU must be be given a huge coffin and buried forever for sure when are we going to be proud or support our own ????
Another problem I’ve seen is Mr President Edgar Chisamba Lungu he’s not being patriotic to Zambian football like Mr sata was that is why we have failed to secure a better coach.

  7. Under20 triumph was obvious, don’t base you facts on cheap cosafa.for me chambeshi is way to small for chipolopolo and nkana muzungu with traceable record should be employed. Am not just a fanof this issue of blood is thicker than water thing no facts are facts we suck us niggers.

  8. Giving chambeshi the job is not experiment. The man really deserve the job. We are not campaigning for chambeshi but for now he is the best coach we have. The man has a flexible mind and he is a team player. He is not arrogant as wada wada. He answered our prayer by giving the neglected players another chance. One big advantage of giving this man the job he will bring in young stars into the senior team. Look at shemmy mahembe and billy mutale. The boys are exceptional.. This is the right person we need to rebuild the team.

  9. One HR went and picked Mbola from lower division. Jacob Mulenga was picked from division 1. Coach is good when he identifies talent as well. It is the league which is not mature maybe – if some good player are not playing. For example I actually appreciate Shemi Mayemba who is not playing regular football at is club. He has some raw power witch can be useful with a little intelligence. Same mold a Donashono Malama and Modorn Malitoli. Chaps who don’t tire. They keep running and running in their position. Don’t also forget the unwritten rule with COSAFA, we it is about talent identification.

  10. Forget…!!! Don’t bring in a local coach,we need a great coach and able to pick right players..too much corruption in local coaches
