Reigning Zambia Super League champions, Power Dynamos have beaten their archrivals Nkana, 2 – nil to win the Kitwe derby played at a fully packed Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.
Nkana looked the better side for most parts of the game but lacked the quality in the final third to breach the rock-solid Power back line led by Faustin Bakodila alongside his central defence partner, international Dominic Chanda and wingbacks Kondwani Chiboni and John Soko.
Twin holding midfielders Linos Makwaza Jnr and Owen Tembo ably protected the back four rendering Power’s danger (D-zone) impenetrable.
The early exchanges saw Power showcase their exquisite one-touch passing football with skipper Godfrey Ngwenya, Joshua Mutale and Fredrick ‘Kante’ Mulambia exchanging passes complimented by some delightful movement. However, the 1991 CAF Cup Winners’ Cup champions could not sustain the fleeting spell.
The Nkana gaffer and former Chipolopolo attacking midfielder, Ian Bakala, one of Zambia’s emerging tacticians seemed to have studied Power’s passing game fielding mostly ball-playing midfielders in the starting lineup that had enterprising skipper, Harrison ‘Lewa’ Chisala, Moussa Lemisa, Patrick ‘Parker’ Gondwe, Jacob Ngulube and veteran Lameck ‘the General’ Kafwaya sticking as a ball-holding top man. The initiative seemed to have paid off with Nkana controlling the game in the first half and restricting the pass-masters, Power.
It was business as usual for the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) glamour side, Power following the unceremonious departure of head coach, Mwenya Chipepo who resigned from his post.

A brace of devastating set pieces in a space of three minutes sunk Nkana in the second half to hand the struggling 13-time league kings a 2 – nil defeat.
The headed goals were reminiscent of the interim Power coach, Linos Makwaza Snr who in his prime was one of the most prolific headers of the ball in the Zambian game, converting numerous glorious goals with his heading prowess.
The first goal was made in Congo DRC. Congolese defence kingpin, Faustin Bakodila delivered a wicked cross from the dead-ball and the finish by last season’s top scorer and fellow Congolese, Andy Bobwa Boyeli was just as great.
Then, Power Dynamos exciting playmaker, Joshua ‘Budo’ Mutale repeated the feat with another delightfully delivered set piece that was buried with expert headed precision by captain fantastic, Godfrey Ngwenya who has regained his form at the right time.
Zambia national team first choice goalkeeper, Lawrence Mulenga was outstanding between the sticks denying Nkana some clear cut chances.
Drama ensued as Nkana were controversially denied what appeared to be a decent goal late in the match but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Whereas Power have dominated the Kitwe derby getting the better of their cross-town rivals in recent fixtures, it was the first time in over thirty years that Power was beating Nkana in any competition for a game played in Lusaka between the two fierce rivals.
The closest that Power came to winning a game against Nkana in Lusaka was in 1991. In the Independence Cup finals played at the defunct Independence Stadium in that year (1991), Power took the lead through Linos Makwaza Snr with Nkana skipper, Beston ‘Quicksilver’ Chambeshi equalizing five minutes before the close of the match.
Nkana went on to win the match on post-match penalties.
With the crucial three points collected at the expense of Nkana in the latest edition of the Kitwe derby, Power who are on sixth position have their title defence back on course as only two points separates them from league leaders, Red Arrows who have amassed 22 points.
Nkana who have been forced to play their home games at Woodlands Stadium due to crowd trouble at their Wusakile home, Nkana Stadium will hope to emerge out of the relegation zone with more positive results in the coming fixtures.
