Dean Smith explains using Patson Daka in an unfamiliar position

Leicester City manager Dean Smith has explained the thinking behind his selection on Saturday.

Smith started with three strikers in his starting line up against Wolverhampton Wanderers with Jamie Vardy leading the attack and Patson Daka and Kelechi Iheanacho in support.

Smith explained that the match needed a bit of speed and that’s where the Zambian international comes in.

Daka was used in an unfamiliar wing position thanks to his pace and the fact that Harvey Barnes is out injured while James Madison suffered a sudden illness 24 hours before the match.

“We wanted to be aggressive and get the supporters behind us. A lot of people were surprised at the selections, but we felt it was a game where we needed a little bit of pace to hurt the opposition. We’re going to have to be adaptable in the games that we play,” Smith said.

“For 20 minutes after they scored, we got overrun in midfield. It was a bit of a risk to play Pato (Patson Daka) on the left, it’s not a position he’s been used to, but we had a lack of options in those areas “

“We felt it was a risk worth taking. He can run all day, Pato, and he’s got pace to burn. We knew he could be a threat and he had a couple of big chances,” he added.

Goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and Timothy Castagne gave the Foxes a much needed victory ending a ten game winless run.

Victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers lifted Leicester out of the bottom three and the Foxes now face the side directly above them in the table, Leeds United, on Tuesday evening, 21:00 CAT kick off.

  1. That’s a good move…Thierry Henry was moved from the wing to be the top man and then back to the wing..Daka can easily fit into the wing in a three pronged attack…does anyone remember the Henry-Eto – Ronaldinho attack system or the Sturridge-Suarez- Sterling system…this can work
