Copper Queens seeded in today’s COSAFA Women’s Championship draw

The Zambia Women’s national team will today learn about their group opponents at next month’s COSAFA Women’s Championship.

The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) confirmed that the draw will be held today for the 9th edition of the tournament.

“The hugely popular COSAFA Women’s Championship returns to Nelson Mandela Bay for the fourth year in a row in 2021 between September 15-26 with the first-round pool stage draw to be held on Thursday at 11h00 (CAT) when the 11 competing sides will learn their fate.”

The draw will be live on COSAFA.TV. Defending champions South Africa, the 2020 runners-up Botswana and Zambia have been seeded in Groups A, B, and C respectively.

The rest of the teams are Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, and the guest nations of Tanzania and South Sudan. The teams will be drawn into three groups, two with four sides and one with three, and the top team in each pool, as well as the best-placed runner-up, will advance to the semifinals.

South Africa has won the last four championships, and seven out of eight in all, with only Zimbabwe breaking their run on home soil in 2011 with Zambia having only reached the final once in 2019 losing 1-0 to Banyana Banyana.

The regional showpiece once again returns to Nelson Mandela Bay for the fourth year in a row with all matches played behind closed doors.

The tournament will take place just a month before the start of the qualifiers for the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations that are scheduled to begin in October.

  2. WORRY WORRY WORRY
After watching our girls’ team at the just ended 2020 Olympics, I have to register my concern about the team. ZAMBIA DOES NOT HAVE WOMEN GOALKEEPERS! The goals that were conceeded could have been avoided if we had goalkeepers. The technical bench should not sit idle. You guys quickly find goalminders before the COSAFA tournament begins if we are to win the matches that lie ahead. Without that we should consider pulling out to avoid embarrassment like the one we suffered through the men’s team. If you did not see the work done by our so called goalkeepers, watch those matches and see for yourselves. You will not know if you should laugh or cry.
The defence needs a bit of attention.Once this is done the COSAFA Cup will be ours for the first time.
