Congo survive late scare as they hold Zambia in Brazaville

Winstone Kalengo was the hero for Zambia in Congo when he scored an equaliser to rescue a point for the Chipolopolo which has kept the hopes for Zambia in the Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Zambia bossed the first half and looked comfortable in midfield with Jack Chirwa and Nathan Sinkala winning the battles while Collins Mbesuma played deep and was the key supplier going forward.

Despite the efforts going forward, Zambia failed to find the target with Nathan Sinkala’s shot from a Mbesuma cross just edging the upright.

On the restart, Congo did not allow Zambia to settle and went ahead through John Massenga with only two minutes played after the Chipolopolo failed to clear a corner properly as was the case in the first leg when they conceded from a set piece.

Lwandamina then rang the changes in the 56th minute when he brought in Christopher Katongo for Jack Chirwa.

Sinkala dropped in the holding role with Katongo playing the advanced role in midfield while Mbesuma joined Kalengo in front.

Zambia looked with Katongo pulling the strings in midfield and it was not longer before Zambia found a clear chance when Mbesuma headed over from a Kalengo cross in the 59th minute.

A minute later it was Kennedy Mweene who bailed out Zambia when he saved after some awful defending in central defense by an otherwise very stable Buchizya Mfune.

Once Conlyde Luchanga was introduced in the 65th minute, Zambia went all out in attack and chances came in succession with Luchanga first benefiting from a Kabaso Chongo run to shoot in the box but is great effort was saved by the goalie in the 71st minute.

Zambia leveled in the 73rd minute when Kalengo got on the end of a Kalaba cross but his effort came off the cross bar… Mbesuma was quick to pounce on the rebound but his overhead effort with his back on the goal was cleared off the line but fortunately Kalengo was close to shoot home from close range.

Zambia still had chances with Mbesuma failing to beat the keeper from close range in the 77th minute before his personal excellent effort coming off the cross bar.

There was one more chance for Zambia in injury time when a square from Kalaba on the left came off a defender to fall loosely for Katongo whose shot belter which was goal-ward ricocheted off the hand of a defender to mark the last action of the game.

The draw moves Zambia to 6 points and stand in third position behind Guinea Bissau and Congo on goal difference.

The Chipolpolo leave Congo tonight at 1900hrs and will arrive in Lusaka at 223ohrs.

  1. Bring back great Kalu. … .We are in danger of missing out on Afcon thanks to the football family who got rid of Kalu. …and all the supporters on this site who were criticising Kalu. ..nkamponona if we don’t go to Afcon…ba stupid

  2. Hope so coz we lyk loco playrs wh haz no experince ntermz ov kepng the bal such gamez we shud avoid experintn playrz.

  3. I am not impressed with the display especially in the first half. I do not know why the coach even employed a defensive line up in the first half. With the coming back of Kangwa, Sunzu and Chisamba, we can dismantle GB at home, in Bissau. By the Mayuka needs to be looked at by the coach as well. Sunzu, Chisamba, Kangwa and probably Mayuka will make a difference moving forward. The good thing is that we are not losing away games, but winning or drawing.
Otherwise, we started slow to the game. We should have started fast and stronger.
It’s good we avoided defeat. We are still in it. I am sure from these two game, the coach must have seen for himself what he needs to do going forward. But tactically, Lwandamina is bankrupt.
The absence of Sunzu was clearly seen. The left back also was porous. Kabamba needs to pull up his socks, the reason why we calling Mbola to be recalled.
The Senegalese ref also denied Zambia victory. A clear penalty to Zambia was waved off by the ref.

  4. Better a draw than loose.katongo shud ve started in that role as i said chirwa couldn’t cope up well and mbesuma is deadly.when are we playing nxt game ?were the draws for word cup qualifiers made?we need to win the two remaining games with good margin then it will be done

  5. Guinea Bissau 7points
    Congo 6 pts
    Zambia 6 pts
Zambia needs to win their last much to avoid any last minute permutations.

  6. So we’ll go to GB with 9pts after we get 3pts off Kenya. We have to beat Kenya handsomely not a 1-0 project that can easily backfire to become a draw.

  7. Lwandamina is a fool how can he leave ck on the bench and starts with that fool j chirwa?is there something wrong wit his brain?ck played well at levy,we lost the game wen that chirwa thing came in and today we scored wen ck came in.

  8. At some certain stages Mweene looked vulnerable, according to me I don’t know to others. Even a conceded was because of his ball watching, continued standing ; get me right am not saying is a bad goalkeeper. What about my Isaac CHANSA? I could not see him on the bench!!!! Iwe Chicken, how do select your team????
Next fixture play Mbesuma and Kalengo upfront. Please don’t go for a lone striker. You also see to it that Chris Katongo start the Match; immediately he was introduced the game changed. We were real ChipoloPolo!!!!!! It’s like you hate Isaac CHANSA? Why leaving him on the bench and you opted for young boys who couldn’t even hold the ball????????

  9. Excellent @Michael!!! Chris Katongo to start the next Game ; immediately he was introduced the game changed. We were real ChipoloPolo!!!!!! Head to Head you can’t compare those kids to the Heroic Katongo. Last time you were ccusing Great Kalu to have been making your decisions, now there Kamanga? Same thing happening; YOU are the problem to this team Iwe Chicken????? It’s like you hate Isaac CHANSA? Why leaving him on the bench and you opted for young boys who couldn’t even hold the ball???????? Shame!!!!

  10. @lameck this coah seems to have issues with isaac chansa the guy was on stand by.To much in justice in team selection.Ba chris n chansa were suppose to start nga natuwina.wen went to win not defend chabashani ba coach

  11. Ba chris and Isaac CHANSA were suppose to start the Match . Wrong decision making brings suspension to football lovers, Peter Makembo, We are waiting for your comments? As a real soccer fan am not happy with the selection. If the players are in good form, use them whether they have massive experience or not. Iwe Chicken, please, you are denting our very good football.

  12. chiken is not a coach he cant read the game. tecnicaly i dont see us qualifying unless the imposibo happens. congo hav pierre le chantre

  13. its very sad to see the zambian defence fable at the hands of Congo.
This never happened when we played DR congo who are more difficult.
If we want to make it to Gabon and Russia we need a stronger defence. Emmanuel mbola, sunzu ,kabaso and indeed chris Munthali’s presence is needed.
Collins mbesuma is a good sub not a starter.
kalengo is getting too selfish at goal.
zambia has lost its taste .
Harve Renard made the right select and mixed the right players.
Chicken has no recipe cus his never coached beyond zambian soccer.
    we need claude De Roy.
    zambia Needs Claude De Roy.
if we want Results we must find money to pay a foreign coach and stop putting faith in Chicken. We need Claude De Roy.
Zambia has a variety of Good players, we need a New Coach period.

  14. I told you not to mess up with Chris Katongo,he controlled the game in the second half and result showed. He needs his arm band back,it is an insult to get it from him.

  15. The has no depth bring mayuka, mbola, singuluma, katebe, munthali, kola and fire that idot coach. Zambia they need six points to qualify as group leaders or best runners.. Kamanga fire that whole bench except that white coach. We want your presence to be felt… Our next game is in June ..

  16. Not a good result but not a good one at the same time, we now have to rely on other results because if Congo win their remaining two games then it ‘ll be difficult for us to qualify even if we also win our games, the coach needs to be serious with what he’s doing and as for Kamanga only time will tell .

  17. Kalaba is a good player but not a leader. He should release the arm band to either Kennedy or Chris. Its too heavy for him. He can’t direct the proceedings of the games. Lol

  18. we change the coach the better lwandamina think local players can win qualify us to afcon.he so dull to have a defence from ZPL.shame

  19. l meant feature defenders from weak ZPL.kalaba he is not strong mentally so the armband should be given to ba Chris ,Kalaba became lost after we conceded only Chris resuscitated chipolopolo,Zambian coaches are stupid same with janza can lead the games ,we would have been on top of the log this time but as usual the coach played useless players at home with GB hence a draw.

Iwe @ J. Givens!! Please don’t touch an excellent Mbesuma, to me he was the man of the Match. Let us appreciate what deserves to be appreciated. He was the key supply of balls, I accept if you blame Kalengo who went to sleep and started showing towards the end of the game and finally got an equalizer.

  21. Iwe @ J. Givens!! Please don’t touch an excellent Mbesuma, to me he was the man of the Match. Let us appreciate what deserves to be appreciated. Naimwe ateacher Kalaba, Mupeleni mkalamba bobe arm band get it back when he retires. Katongo is inspirational to the team. He deserves that respect, please bear with me it’s bringing confusion but bringing unite.
    I beg you Rainford.

  22. Ck and cm are the pipo driving this team chicken wateva they cal u ignore these at yo on peril.ck is the leader.personaly i neva loved ck but wat he do,his attitude and his inspiration can’t be compared to anyone.

  23. A draw away from Home is a good result…We should have beaten Congo at home and hence bagged 4 pts from the Two fixtures….Going into the final two games we need Mbola and Left back and keep Kabaso on the right back…The SUNZU and Muthali partnership at Centre Back is also solid combination….Also Chisamba should reclaim his position on the right wing …Here is my winning line up against Guinea

    1. MWEENE
    2. MBOLA
    3. Kabaso Chongo
    4. CHRISTOPHER MUNTHALI
    5. STOPILLA SUNZU
    6. NATHAN SINKALA
    7. CHISAMBA LUNGU
    8. CHRISTOPHER KATONGO
    9. WINESTONE KALENGO
    10. Collins Mbesuma
    11. RAINFORD KALABA

  24. Zambia can amass three points from the last two games however having recorded no win at home thus far I fear the chances of qualifying are miniscule.

  25. Did not watch the game I will comment after watching the replay tomorrow but one thing I will always not feel ashamed to say as I earlier yesterday commented we have a future in conlyde luchanga the boy is fearless and as if the coach read my comments as i have read he brought him earlier today go zambia go.we will qualify no matter what

  26. Pliz fellow soccer lovers let’s not politicize football. Kamanga won and kalushya lost period afterall does kalu feed ypur families or you feed yourself ,either does kamanga do i guess the answer is no.lets be progressive. When one wins it is awin whether you hate him or not .how many times has chipolopolo nearly killed us with its qualifying process-_on numerous occassions lets just get used or else leave kamanga alone .Time time or ni time yao, vonse ni time MOZEGETER sang.so just be mature and talk real football as it is to be played on the pitch.even The mighty Brazil have tumbled at times.Germany, spain only to mention afew. The pharaohs have missed 3 consquentive afcon Finals ,nigeria 2,morocco atleast zambia in my lifetime only missed once.we are going to Gabon remember its our homeground and we will feel at home there

  27. Iwe @ J. Givens!! Please don’t touch an excellent Mbesuma, to me he was the man of the Match. Let us appreciate what deserves to be appreciated. I beg you Rainford. @ Gubrimes that’s very good. We’re lifting the team so that if coach reads OUR concerns he can act. Football is not politics.

  28. When wil some pipo grow up?all.you do is insult others, what is it that the coach has done to be insulted?learn to appreciate his love for the game and the gud job he is doing, critics based on gud morals are worthy it but others its all about insulting,,,what kind of funs are u?

  29. Gentlemen dont just tolk the team was gud nd we played well no one expected that considering congo performance last time if our local players can play like that, dont think zambia has better players than congo that was a star staded squad for congo playing in gud teams in europe this means our league is maching on luk at luchanga what a player kabamba etc its congo or zambia forget ba bissau we underated bissau they ii fall but kenya here we ii swat

  30. I am thinking we need kalengo, luchanga, kangwa, sate and then experienced guys in one team. Good play in Congo anyway. We need to keep the perpetually qualifier going. Go Zambia.

  31. Just an honest opinion:
The game was good, zambia played very well..the only problem is in the two major defencive positions…4 and 5 all the goals we have conceded are through the centre…even heading out corners is a problem.
