Champions Mazembe & Sundowns out, Zamalek qualify

Defending champions TP Mazembe have been dumped out of the CAF Champions League after they drew 1 – 1 against Wydad Casablanca to go out on a 3 – 1 aggregate score-line.

Mazembe came into the second leg trailing 2 – 0 and the coach named attacking midfielder Given Singuluma alongside Rainford Kalaba.

Mazembe went ahead in the 59th minute but the Moroccan champions pulled one back and held on to a draw to qualify to the group stage.

Kalaba was substituted in the 56th minute while Singuluma clocked 70 minutes.

Kabaso Chongo and Nathan Sinkala did not play.

In South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns won 2 – 1 at home against AS Vita of Congo but were knocked out of the CAF Champions league on away goals despite the two side being level (2 – 2) on aggregate.

Chipolopolo goalie Kennedy Mweene watched from the bench.

Both Mazembe and Sundowns now drop into the CAF Confederations Cup tournament.

Emmanuel Mayuka watched from the bench as Zamalek qualified to the group stage with a 1 – 1 draw away against MO Bejaia of Algeria.

  1. Teams qualified to the league stage – Ahly, Zamalek(Egypt) Setif- Algeria, Wydad Casablanca-
Morocco, Asec Abidjan – Ivory Coast, Enyimba- Nigeria, As Vita- DRC and. zesco utd- Zambia.

Tough teams, waiting for draws. Zesco beef up your defence. Kaya

  2. At this stage, we will see what our ZEGA MAMBO is made of. No more fooling around in defence if we are to make a mark. Hard luck to Katumbi boys, hope they can harmmer the boys in the other tournament, otherwise I was hoping that they would qualify to the group stage of the CL so that they meet zesco, it would have been a match to watch.

  3. That AS Vita Club is very strong. There is something I have seen with this Congolese Club. They are very strong and have a never-say-die attitude. They don’t give too much respect to opponents. They really push even when they are leading. I see this club going far. Something Zambian clubs can learn from.
    All the best to Zesco.

    • This is the same hunger with which their National team plays with! They attack in unison and press their opponent when they lose possession. We used to play this pressing game a long time ago but now we are too slow and give up easily. The closest we came to this kind of game was under Renard!

  4. AS Vita has another Mbombo, very deadly. Most of these Zesco players will be snatched away. It will be interesting if all clubs from the sub sahara were to be placed in the same group and all North African clubs in one group.

  5. Mayuka has become a perpetual bench warmer wherever he goes. He failed in UK, France and is now warming the bench in Africa. Its high time we forgot about him. The reason is, the boy is too playful! Likes clubbing too much.
