Zambian Champions Green Buffaloes Women’s Football League will face University of Western Cape FC of South Africa in Group A of the CAF Women’s Champions League | COSAFA Qualifier 2024 that will be staged in Blantyre, Malawi from August 15-24, 2024.
The draw for the COSAFA Women’s Champions League conducted by COSAFA competitions manager Joshua Knipp and Banyana Banyana captain Refiloe Jane took place in Johannesburg with Herentals Queens (Zimbabwe) and FC Ongos Ladies of Namibia completing Group A.
In Group B, hosts Ascent Academy will battle against Gaborone United Ladies FC of Botswana, Uniao Desportiva da Lichinga (Mozambique) and Young Buffaloes of Eswatini.
The competition will be played on a round-robin format with the top two sides in each pool advancing to the semifinals. Only the club that wins this year’s qualifier will advance to the continental competition to be held later this year.
Two-time CAF Women’s Champions League winners and current holders Mamelodi Sundowns have qualified automatically for the defence of their African title, so will not appear in the COSAFA tournament this year.
It means that the Southern African region will have two teams at the continental finals, Sundowns and the winning side from the qualifiers in Malawi.
